cd player maintenance

I've managed to find several older cd players and changers. Some of them are proned to skipping. Often cleaning up the CD helps. How do you clean up CD players, specifically the heads (or whatever they are called)?

Is there any other lubrication or PM recomended?

I have cleaned up a couple that skipped by CAREFULLY cleaning the lens on the laser. I use a photo lens tissue and cleaning solution. Draw belts get stretched over time that really easy to fix. Get the dust out. Old Sony units are prone to vibration. I have a Sony CDP-67 ES changer that skipped from just walking across the room. I put it in a cabinet on a concrete floor and it has been fine for 2 years no issues.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Can you suggest any any good sources for belts? turntableneedles .com has great cross references for cassette belts, not sure about cd belts

I haven't had any luck cleaning the lens of the laser pickup unit. I have owned and sold about 50 cd players in the past 4 years and not once a skipping or non-reading laser worked with cleaning.

I have experienced that lasers can be temperamental, literally. Sometimes, low or high temperature of the cd player makes it work or not work.

I will once again, try to clean an old dead Denon with KSS-210A. These lasers are cheap but will try your method.

Belts, it's best to find the exact replacement. There are however, many belt retailers that you must specify round/square, thickness and diameter or circumference. Exact measurement is difficult at best.

I am fortunate to have a professional electronics parts supplier 5 miles from my house. I just take the old belt up and match it.
