Choose Between Two Integrated Amps

I have been a big fan of Harman/Kardon components. My first audio system back in the summer of 1976 consisted of a H/K receiver (I cannot remember the model number).

Currently I own a McIntosh MA6200 solid state integrated at 75WPC, and a Jolida JD-202BRC tube integrated at 40WPC. However, I have an opportunity to own a vintage H/K integrated.

First choice is a H/K A-402 solid state integrated amp

Specifications:
Power Output: 40 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)
Frequency Response: 10Hz to 60kHz
Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.1%
Damping Factor: 50
Input Sensitivity: 2.2mV (MM), 125mV (line)
Signal to Noise Ratio: 69dB (MM), 77dB (line)
Dimensions: 394 x 375 x 134mm
Weight: 11kg
Year: 1976

Next choice is a H/K A230 Ballad tube integrated amp

Specifications:
Power Output: 15 watts per channel into 8Ω (stereo)
Frequency Response: 15Hz to 70kHz
Total Harmonic Distortion: 1%
Input Sensitivity: 3mV (MM), 300mV (line)
Signal to Noise Ratio: 60dB (MM), 70dB (line)
Speaker Load Impedance: 8Ω to 16Ω
Valve Complement: 1 x GZ34, 4 x EL84, 2 x ECC82, 3 x ECC83
Dimensions: 13-13/16 x 4-5/8 x 11-1/2 inches
Weight: 18lbs
Finish: Copper Escutcheon, Silver Grey Cage

Additional Information:
  • Both amps have been cleaned and bad parts have been replaced.
  • Both amps will come 100% functional.
  • Tube integrated will include new tubes.
  • Both amps will be in good condition, if not better.
  • The speakers have an SPL of 90dB, shouldn't be a problem driving either one.
Given the information needed to make a decision, which amp would you go with and why. It's a tough decision to make, and this is why I come to you for assistance. Any help you can provide will be very much appreciated.

I would chose based on the speakers I had available to use with the amps and type/size of space. 15 wpc isn't going to power every speaker in a large space. But it'll sound great with the right setup.

I should have mentioned that my speakers have an SPL of 90dB. I don't think this will be a problem. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am snot sure why the Mods moved my thread to Solid State when one of the amps is tube.

I could really use your help, a decision must be made soon.

Best thing would be to hear them both with your speakers, then pick. All else being equal, buy the one that looks better with your existing components.

I would say the lower 15w but it's really on your listening habits. I need power when I want it or I'm not happy. Sometimes I'm outside and want to hear my music still but if you dedicate your time in that space solely for it then I'd choose the latter.

Although I feel it should be touched on that it's better to have more power. It's possible to outgrow those and will come a time to use different speakers in the future.

Or you could just get both hah job done.

In person audition is impossible. I'm in WV and the amps are in MI.

To refresh everyone's memory on the first post...

I have a McIntosh MA6200 solid state integrated - 75WPC
Jolida JD-202BRC tube integrated - 40WPC
My speakers have an SPL of 90dB
The volume control never goes past 12:00, most of the time it is around 9:00, and I am referring to both amps.

You've got plenty of options for more power then. I'd go with the one you think is cooler since you can't hear them.
