Isn't that what it all boils down to? Good/expensive equipment doesn't mean squat if it ain't jivin' with the room and the other components in the chain.

I'd rather have modest gear in the "right" room with the "right" components operating at it's full potential than expensive gear sitting there looking cool but sounding lame.

Can I get an Amen?

"Modest" means different things to different folks. Bottom line, if you dig it, that's all that matters.
I do see your point, many people I know with high dollar gear have their stuff in the shop for one reason or another. But they may like it that way, trying to make improvements. Others need to spend big money just to satisfy their audio lust.
I consider my stuff "modest" because it is all vintage and cheap. I have heard a few very expensive rigs that were impressive to say the least!
