I bought a pair of Coral 12TET-1 12" triaxials today in homemade Karlson cabinets. The cabinets are made of "Tigerwood", which is unknown to me, but is very pretty. The speakers didn't show any response on the tweeters of both speakers, and one of the midranges when tested at the sellers house. We agreed on a price of $20, and if the drivers proved to be good, I would pay another $30. Took an hour at home to remove the speakers and test them. I had to call Ron and tell him I owed him another $30. Hate when that happens.
One speaker had broken wires at the input terminal block on the speaker, and the other has a problem which is still unknown. Removing the cover off the back of the speaker allowed access to the crossovers, and using my Ohmeter on the leads, all drivers proved to be good. Probably a bad capacitor in the crossover.
These speakers are made by Coral, who was an original equipment supplier to several other manufacturers such as Calrad. My first stereo had Calrad 12" speakers which were built by Coral. Coral made some very nice stuff, as well as some junk. Much like Bose today. This pair of triax's is probably among their very best stuff.
I feel very lucky to find a pair in such good shape in my own home town. Thanks to our mail lady, who delivers to my old company as well as to Ron. After Laurie told me she ran into someone who had some old speakers for sale, and I contacted Ron, it turns out we went diving together in San Carlos, Mexico a couple of years ago. Small world, isn't it?
