Corrosion/rust removal

I have a vintage audio pre-amp that has some corrosion/rust developed on the edge of the black metal faceplate. Is there an easy way to remove the corrosion/rust?

Make sure you try whatever in an inconspicuous location (I use the underside of the faceplate) before using it to "fix" a cosmetic defect in a highly visible area. The cure could well prove worse than the disease...

What ever abrasive you use...sand paper 400 to 1000 grit or 00 steel wool, make sure you clean with iso alcohol to remove any oils or particles. Plus, hit with enamel paint as soon as it dries. Thin coats.

Ospho, from body repair supply. The phosphoric acid will recover the rust to metal and remove the rest of the corrosion. You can also use phosphoric acid based tile cleaner from a janitor supply store. I have used that on my fishing reels for years. It make the chrome glisten. The cleaner is great for lime buildup in the faucets, toilets and sinks in your home. No more scrubbing.

I've been down that road... no fun! Note: 70% rubbing alcohol will take the numbers right off a dial... :) That's a lessons you only need to learn once.

Kind Regards,
John

Just be mindful of any lettering, the alcohol can take the paint off.

I used Naphta spirits on a Fisher SA-100 cage and it did not remove the paint. The rust has not returned. I would not use acid or abrasives.
