Craigs List Boat Anchor

reVox reGret
Finally was the first caller on a C.L.listing,and for $40 bucks I brought home a National NC-183D Receiver. I know Nothing about Ham Radio but ever since I saw radioactive's Nat'l NC-183D pic in his signature line "real radios glow in the dark" I've been on the look-out for one. It powered up but a couple of the Tubes are out. I found a pdf.manual on boatanchors.com but I need advise on how to get this up and running. So-What do you think?

nice rig.
pretty much same thing you do to tube amps needs to be done to that radio. new filter caps and new coupling caps. dont touch any of the mica or ceramic caps and you should be ok and not have to get it re-aligned. (unless you have the ability to do that kind of work)

oh no you dont, your not going to blame your new addiction on me :D

seriously with some elbow grease it should look as good as mine;)

i echo what ke4mcl said but first off replace the tubes that are dead with some fresh one and take it from there.have you tested the tubes with a tube tester to make vsure theyre shot?if so do the above. after you've done that you can start troubleshooting the radio to see if its working and go from there. as far as replacing caps etc (mica) if your familar with a rf signal generator a alignment is pretty easy.if not repalce the filter caps at least.

oh by the way for $40 i would of ran out of the sellers house giggling like a girl lol.congrats on your 183d and keep us posted with the progress on the restoration.regards,
chris

oh btw you might want to post a thread at videokarma too as theres probally more help over there for boatanchors than here at ak .

Ditto. JustRadios has exact matches for the cap values that may also save you an alignment

OMIGAWD !! A 183D for $40 ?!? Be still, my flutterin' heart !! The gen'ly go for couple hunnert on We-Know-Where...These guys were called "The bandswitching HRO", & were regarded as National's No. 1-A radio...But w/these, you didn't have to have a bunch of those coil boxes. Yeah, I'd-a left that house gigglin' like a Little Girl...
