Craigslist SCAM alert for a Pioneer SX-1080 Receiver

I am just now getting in to Vintage stereo. That said, I have been trying to collect up Pioneer pieces that I remember from my teenage years that was way out of my price range back then. So far I have picked up on a pair of HPM-100's 100W speakers. I have been scouring Thrift stores and Craigslist for a good vintage Tuner to power them with and that is when I came across an ad for a SX-1080 receiver for my HPM's in Alexandria, Va that a guy named "Dave Culver" had for $325.00. A check of him shows him to be all but non existent and where he claims he lives is a Condo that is vacant and currently for sale. I just noticed he has placed the same Receiver for sale again on Craigslist. I hope I am not breaking any rules by posting this here, but I hate a scam artist and he is most definitely one. https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/d/pioneer-sx-1080/6498253624.html

Perhaps we should pitch-in and overnight the guy a check...get the signature and some video and voila'!
He is keeping his theft below 500.00$ per person which basically he know's the local law enforcement is not going to waste their time running him down for stealing someones money that was stupid enough to send it to him from another state. send him a message and tell me the line of B.S. he tells you. I am sure he frequents here because when I was able to talk to him on the phone, he mentioned this website by name. Message him like your interested in it and see what email address he gives you and let me know what it is.

Well if he reads this forum and he reads this thread he's obviously going to be expecting this 'expose' phone call surely?!! I'm not knocking the intent to rumble him, but like I say.. But yes, best of luck, I hate scammers. I was done over by one in Holland a year or so ago.

Definitely a scam. I'm close enough to where he claims to be from that I could pick up, I've responded to a few of his ads, basically saying I have cash and can come pick up after work, never a reply from him...

The address he gave me as his was 205 South Reynolds Street Apt. 309 Alexandria, Va and the phone number he was calling from and using is (410) 845-7456

Well I see he has moved on from Arizona!!! Yep posted a SX 1250 for the same amount and a RT 909 for around $800. “ Will ship” was a red flag plus there was a warning ⚠️ on Phoenix about a seller calling himself “ Dave”.
I called him out and this was his reply:

I actually did!! He was also posting in Arizona a few weeks ago. My email & his reply is shown below

I guess i won't ask my brother in law to go pick this up for me then.
Knew it seemed way under priced.

I too have responded to a couple of "dave's" ads via e-mail (including an SX-1250 he put up one time for $350) and not gotten a response. The only way I would ever phone about a CL ad would be from a pay phone until we had a few conversations on email.

Just curious what the scam is?
Would someone try to get you to paypal them and not show up?
It's definitely sketchy but I'm just not sure what a "Dave" would do for the actual scam.

I think he's pricing stuff just enough under market to get people to bite on a good deal and expect him to ship. Which would explain why ''hey, my girlfriend lives right up the street from you, can I come by tonight" messages go unanswered. He does typically offer shipping in his ads.

The scam is this: You setup an appointment to meet him. Either he won’t respond vs not showing up. He wants people to go the “ Shipping “ Route. You send your hard earned money & in return he keeps it!! Without delivering any of the posted items.
The low price is the hook to reel you in.

People like him require a swift kick to the nuts! It'll come back on him one of these days.

Same price, your choice:
Sansui 9090db
Pioneer RT-909
Pioneer SX-1080
Lots of cities across the US.

When will folks learn to investigate too cheap to be real immediately after sending a response to get the item, just in case it is real
