I just want to share my experience with you. I have always heard good things about Dali speakers from you people so my first pair of musical sounding speakers are a pair of Dali 104, which I bought for less than $70. For that price, they are excellent speakers, however keep in mind that the bass response is limited and with my test amp also a bit boomy. The mids are slightly recessed. Nonetheless they sound more alive than a pair of Infinity Primus 250 for example, which sound more balanced but lack character, they are less musical.
Now, at the beginning of the year I had the chance of getting a pair of modern Dali Zensor 5 and I am absolutely in love with them. Like the Dali 104 before them, the Sensor 5 don't have deep bass and would require a subwoofer if you listen to a lot of hip hop or similar, but they are so melodious that I am happy to hear them without one.
I assume the Zensor 7 have more low end and the price difference isn't that great, I ended up with the 5 simply because of the price, I got them really cheap.
Let's just ignore the price for the moment. When compared with either the Primus 250 and the older Dali 104, the Zensor 5 mids and highs are just amazing, it's like the first time I'm hearing music the way I wanted to hear music, even better sounding than a pair of quality headphones. Some might call these bright, but I definitely don't. The sound is perfect for any quality digital source, haven't yet tested these out with my cassette decks.
Maybe some people would prefer the more laid back sound signature of older speakers, but for me the Zensor 5 sound perfect as far as the midrange(very upfront) and tweeter performance goes, the sound is natural and airy, you'd get goosebumps listening to Enya or similar on these speakers.
I'm not experienced when it comes to speakers but I'm just saying, I can't imagine anyone getting these at a fair price and being disappointed by the sound they make.
As a bonus(I guess), they are pretty small and light, not difficult to find space for these inside the house. From the factory they come with metal stands but I think in the future I will make my own stands for them, because they are pretty short and I listen music while standing, so I want them near my ear level.
You will excuse my short review/comparison and lack of pictures, I only started the thread because I know many people can't do auditions before a purchase and like myself, many have trouble deciding what to buy, especially on a budget.
The market is absolutely saturated with speakers, new and old, my only advice would be to look up these Dali speakers, even if you pay near mrsp price for them they are worth it.
Currently Dali has replaced the Zensor series with the Spector(?) and I assume they are basically the same speaker with a few tweaks.
As for my older Dali 104 and Primus 250, despite lacking when compared with the Zensor 5 I will not be selling them, simply because the 104 still sound good and they are not worth getting rid of and the infinity Primus 250 are good at loud volume and don't require a subwoofer, meaning they are good party speakers.
I do all my comparisons on my old Onkyo tx-sv 727 receiver, your results might vary a bit, according to what amp you may have.
