Dang it.

Got a Technics SU-G91 130WPC amp and a kickass tuner and EQ at GW for $27 two weeks ago.

Fixed a bunch of bad solder joints inside and fixed the overload problem it had.

Then it started overloading again. Found more solder joints inside bad causing fan issues.

Went good for a few days. Then overload again. This time the fan needed a little oil.

Starts overloading again this morning. Find that the fan motor is weak and doesn't start spinning sometimes, causing the amp to shut down. Multimeter confirms problem is fan, not voltage supply to the fan. Replacement motor costs $35 shipped, and it HAS to be the original Matsushita part because generic DC motors won't work (I tried). Taking motor apart and cleaning doesn't help, replacement is needed.

I don't know guys. That's two receivers and $80 down the drain so far I've wasted trying to get my sound setup going. Even if I were to get the new fan motor, I have no doubt it'd only be a matter of time before something else in the amp went belly up. I'm tired of going to bed aggravated and nervewracked from sitting with a soldering iron for hours. I'm tired of feeling angsty while I listen to music because I don't trust my amp's reliability. I guess I'm game for small repair stuff, but I just don't have it in me to be constantly working on something that matters so much to me. My sound system should make life better, not be constantly giving me headaches trying to figure out what's wrong with the amp.

I'd give fan motor replacement a go, but my parents are not allowing it. My mom says she's sick of me wasting money on "used crap". She says she would rather me spend a good chunk of money on something new than to be constantly putting in money, time, and effort into keeping something old going. As much as I hate to say it, I think she may be right on this one.

qboneus offered me one hell of an amp that needed repair, but I just need a simple integrated or a nice little receiver with a decent amount of power. So, and I know this completely goes against everything AK stands for, I'm thinking of returning the Technics to GW for store credit and putting my money towards a new Yamaha RX-497.

Nice little 2-channel receiver, 75WPC, and IT HAS A PHONO INPUT!, which really matters to me and which I understand is rare for newer stuff. It costs $301 from Amazon shipped.

I really, really like the old Technics... but this Yamaha looks decent, and it'll let me focus on actually listening to my music instead of constantly trying to keep my equipment running. Unfortunately with my mother now on my back about vintage gear, this might be the only way to go . I don't like it, but at the same time it would be nice to have a reliable amp so I can focus on building a nice vinyl collection and tracking down some good vintage speakers. What do you guys think? I have enough in savings to get it soon.

When my Sony Receiver lost the center channel I replaced it with a Yamaha HTR-6140 and I love it! Did a lot of looking too, just felt good going with a Yammi. Hooked to my Advent Heritage & Wharfedale Ctr., it sounds great. Then I found my vintage system for the den, got a great deal, was lucky I guess. I guess what I'm getting at is I got things up & running with my main system, dependable & good quality, and then went hunting for a nice vintage setup. This should be fun & very enjoyable, so if you have run into some bad luck and lost some coin, maybe you should follow your gut. Once you have the new Yammi, the pressure will be off to find the "Killer Deal" & you can really take your time, save some $ and let the vintage deal find you down the road a bit!:thmbsp:

Best of luck!:music:

It isn't written anywhere that you have to love ripping your gear apart and repairing it for this hobby. It is written somewhere that this should be fun.

Have fun first, whatever your definition is. :D

I would look at a Cambridge Audio if I was looking new in that price range.

Cheers! :)
