DBX SF 10 - useless without controller?

I decided to buy these on a whim, was not aware of them beforehand and seemed quite interesting and after some discussion with the seller I took them home. Unfortunately I did not realize at the time that the DBX controller is an integral part of the design and functioning of this particular model.

I have been listening to them in the living room place at the long wall ( 15 X 25 ) about 6 feet apart and around 4 feet from the wall itself. Not much room for moving around and have other speakers placed at the 15 foot wall.

Using a Luxman L 480 and could also use an NEC AUA 8300E, my understanding is that these speakers tend to need higher power, 100 a channel being a good starting point. I do have an Acurus A 250 as well as Vincent SV 236 MK but not really wanting to use them due to various set ups.

They certainly sound alright, but any thought of the solid bottom end does not present itself while sitting in front of them, but move around nearer to the side walls for example and it is definitely more pronounced. The Seller seems to think the controller is simply a glorified equalizer but from what I have read it is quite essential in order to have these speakers perform properly.

I understand they can sound off, rather flat and perhaps congested without the controller, and of course I have found out quickly that they are very difficult to come by. Quite certain because of this handicap I will be returning them for something else. Impulse buying can be fun but I think these take up a bit more room than I prefer. They actually are not bad as is, but knowing they could be much better does not help! The foam surrounds have just been replaced as well.

Presently I also have Vector Research Soundwave Soliloquys, Keswick Volante Evolutions, AR 11 Hi Res, Boston Acoustics T830s, Kef Coda III and some bookshelf Gemme Tonic G3s.

He did mention having a number of Kef speakers and many other brands, would have to see what is available.
