DCM Time Windows 1a

Well, after years away from this forum I come back to share about a recent find. I read about these DCM speakers on here years ago, but in the UK they are rare. I found some on an auction site and just had to buy them to hear them. I fitted them with some spikes as they had none.

I can't believe how good they are. I bought them to compare against some Acoustic Energy Evo 3's that are in my 3rd system, which is the one I listen to most as it's in the kitchen/diner. I've always loved the AE's, and use them with a small sub just to fill out below 40hz. The DCM's just blow them away. I was switching between the AE's and the DCM's, level matched through 2 different amps, and the difference in the openness of sound and the size of soundstage was huge. I changed over the amps and the same massive difference was still there. My 11 year old boy walked through while I was doing it and said 'Just sell those AE's dad, the 'new' ones are a hundred times better.' He was right.

How they sound so good with a strange 2 way design I don't know, but they are so natural sounding, and in my room I don't need the sub at all. The R50's in my main system are better, sure, but these DCM's must go to 30hz without much roll off. Totally unfatiguing listening. Not as bright or revealing as the JBL's in my second system, but much more natural sounding.

Some of the old speaker designs are just timelessly brilliant, like my Cambridge Audio R50's, and these DCM's are another example.

Yup, terrific speakers. Off the shelf drivers, with a great time aligned crossover & placed in a brilliant enclosure.
Do yours still have the original foam wrap grills? Most by now have dried out, and have been replaced with cloth, and some with new foam.

Here's the resto thread on mine. Found them at a yard sale. Mine are early serial numbers.

Cheers!

The Time Window is a great speaker for soundstage. You can put one in the loo and one in the garage and still have a great soundstage to listen to and 'see' when you close your eyes. Their limits are a bit of lower mid bass muddiness when driven hard and full range, DCM did make subs for the early TW, and the highs are not as extended as some speakers as they are using the Philips Mylar tweeters. Overall, great speakers and it seems they do get good money in the UK, twice the US price (one bay example of the TW not the 1a). Still worth it.

Mine do have the original covers and are in almost mint condition.

I think the 1a's had a sock, not wrap around foam. I have 1a's and they have a sock, not foam, and they sure look original.

The foam on my original TW has a couple bruises but is just fine. No reason to replace. 37 years old and still cranking out the tunes.

I have what I believe is version 1a TimeWindows and they have a wraparound.
do your TWs have a nut on the bottom holding onto a chunk of all thread going to the top plate through the speaker? I looked at your posts and didn't see any pictures of the whole speaker except the one when you got them or the tweeters. Trying to verify you do have the 1a as the early TW did not have painted rims on the end plates and looked a lot like that one pic. You had em open and such so you should know. Just curious if you have some pics of parts.

I did not show any pics of mine. They are backed into storage right at the moment; so pic or checking for the all thread is not possible. I remember checking on their version a while back and think I remember them being 1As. I may be mistaken, I may not. :dunno:

TW 1a are awesome speakers, i sold off my collection of DCM, i had to 'cause i had too many speakers. All of them were excellent in my opinion.
