Denon DP-47F -?? - Anyone familiar with it?

Old_Tech

Yer-isn't!
Saw this one tonight and it looks really beautiful. Expensive but nice. I don't need it at all but rarely do I see them this noce. This Denon has the rosewood deck, outside cover controls and that massive servo controlled arm. Is this baby a beast of burden or a thing of beauty? Will I have my share of problems even if its in great condition? Has an Ortofon cartridge on it for now.
Guys, any comments on this table? Is it just another high priced Denon or on the short list?
Thanks... :smoke:

The only Denon I have is a cartridge by Denon !!!:D
Never the less, this turn table would go very well with my DL-160.:thmbsp:

Almost twenty hours on it now. When will it break in?

Thanks for the info on the 47F. Lost out anyways...

Fancy, full auto, with auto size and speed sensing. I had a DP-45F, essentially the same table with a flatter, lighter base. The automation is wonderful. I'd say it's sonically competent, but I like my other tables better. I suspect that the auto-lift series (ending in L) are better, but never heard one, so can't say for sure. I think money can be better spent.

Agreed - Thanks Howard. Seems a bit overdone to me as well.

Love my Denon...
Love it. 19 hours on it now and waiting to see what will change. I just listened to some Beatles and it did not do well. Probably the recording. I could not get the sound right. But everything else today was WOW!
Tomorrow she will go will into the twenty hour range. I have to sit and seriously listen. Thank You as always. :thmbsp:

The 47-f is a fantastic player. As Howard said, it is sonically competent but the automation features are what make this my everyday player. I have other fine tables to choose from like a Pioneer PL-115D, Empire 698, and Sonographe SG-3 but none of them beat the Denon in sonics or even come close in automation and all have some form of auto lift or return.

The things I like about the 47f are that I can actually clean records on it, the servo arm plays badly warped records and is not susceptible to skipping when I walk across my old hardwood floors, I get no distortion on the fourth torture track of HiFi News test record, it starts and stops fast with a push of a button, speed is dead on, and, most importantly, it stops spinning and the tonearm returns when I pass out on the couch.

The one minor thing I dislike about it is that at times it may not be the quietest deck or as well isolated compared to much more costly turntables. And this is very minor.

Edit: I also use both the DL-110 and 160 on this table and the combination is fantastic. The easy change on the headshell is another plus.

The Denon 47F is what I have hooked up to main system in the living room.

Sonically competent. I like that. :D

Cornbread gave an excellent description and saved me some typing.

I have been happy with my 47F and have no shame spinning it up when company comes over. Having said that, I will rate it a tad behind my 1210M5G. That is after listening to both with the same cart on the same system. But its not by much. If all I was left with was the the 47F, I would not complain. Especially in a world very short on auto TTs.

I biggest fear is longevity. My 47F works great now, but who knows how long that type of tonearm and auto controls will last. But as long as it works, I will keep using it.

I also got mine for a steal, so price was not a consideration when I bought it.

Thanks Guys!

I had an idea this was a good table and as luck would have it I lost the auction. Maybe someday.

I was in too big a hurry on this one I think. Yes, longevity was a concern I had too but these days that table would cost thousands to be sure. The winner paid 283 bucks for it.
Nice pics rex - wish I knew you had one I may have learned more and bid higher....

They used to go for more than that.

I believe I paid $250 for mine back in 1986 at Mainz Kastel, Germany AAFES. It listed for $400 back then and came with a DL-80 cartridge that had a replaceable stylus. The English versions came with a DL-160. I believe it was going for $600 when it was discontinued which was not too long ago and was the last turntable available that had a servo controlled tonearm.

$250 was a lot of money for a young GI back then especially when CDs were becoming all the rage. But, I think I have more than got my money out of it and the enjoyment it has provided over the years is immeasurable.

Sorry I did not see your post sooner. I would have been more than happy to answer your questions.

These models do show up time to time on Ebay. Since they were higher end tables back in the day (relatively speaking), they seem to be well cared for by the owners (as best as you can tell from pictures). I do recommend watching for ones that have the original box. I can't imagine one of these being shipped without it.

The winning price of $283 is fair. $300 seems about average. Once you start going higher than that, you are open to other TTs that may be a better consideration.

Cheers

Getting into this thread late but I just got the same deck from Epay for $61 plus shipping which cost me $55 but the seller gave me $14 back since I had him send it to my work addy (less $$ and less pain).

The deck was advertised missing the counterweight ($60) online replacement and a cracked cover. Man when I got the deck I was kinda pissed that these items were the way they were, then I read the auction again... dang.. as advertised AND I bid on it. Ah well, the reason I wanted a new to me Denon was my current one just stopped spinning.. dead. I took the counterweight mechanism off the DP-37 I had and mounted it in place of the partial one on the new DP-47F (advertised again as tone arm not working, possibly due to no counterweight). I had to cobble it together with parts from both units to get it to mount up. but it works. Plugged her in and tried the auto functions and it works GRRREAT. Sounds MIGHTY fine as well. This TT has a fairly high output too. I'm listing to it with vintage Ortofon OM-20 super with a NOS OM-20FL cart and it sounds A LOT better than the DP-37.

+1 on the plinth sensitivity. The plinth, even tho its almost 2X the thickness and better build than the DP-37 it sure does pick up its fair share of vibrations. VERY sensitive ... to the point of me having to do something about that. I have it on an isolation platform on a shelf hanging off the wall and all I have to do is tap the shelf and I get instant tap out of the speakers. WOW thats for sure something I need to address. I'm thinking of cutting squares of Magic Eraser and putting those squares under each of the feet to dampen the plinth. Other than that sensitivity, the sound is super. I'm totally happy with my find. The dust cover from the DP-37 is a direct replacement so I'm good with that. If the better units from Denon sound even better than this one, I'll still be on the hunt for an upgrade. But for now I am one happy listener.

DP-47F for $61 plus ship from Cali to PA and it works better than I got it and it took me 15 minutes to fix the counterweight issue....:banana::banana: minor scroe.

Cheers,

Bob

I was watching that auction but didn't bid as I was afraid of a DOA. I'm glad it is working for you. BTW, what part of PA are you in?

I would risk DOA for a crack at a 62 or a 67, but not a 47.

What you say about the better models is probably true of many out there and why you don't see them for that cheap (yet). Cracked cover doesn't bother me as it's not an uncommon problem with these lids, AND I have a 2nd one off my DP-37F that fits with no cracks. This table looks fairly new. Denon still has it listed on their discontinued models on their website too. Of course they don't have anything other than the model # listed but thats OK I got the SM and OM off the Vinyl Engine website.

I'm in Philly.

Bob

Denon DP-47F

I've had one for 20-30 years and it's played flawlessly. I'd figured at the time that it would be my last turntable, so I chose one that would play warps well -- never suspecting that it would still be possible decades later to replace many of my esoteric LPs. Good compliance match with my Adcom XC Micro-Ridge II -- super-high-output (nearly 3V!!) moving coil works fine with a passive preamp direct to power amp. Decent table overall, definitely a step above entry-level units like Pro-Ject Carbon. Very solid, massive rosewood base. Looks much better in person than in photos. A good match for my Quad ESL / Quad II system. If you can pick one up for $400, you could do much worse. I think about $650 new in the 1980s.

I have a DP47F and it is a very fine turntable and works flawlessly. I upgraded the cart to a 2M bronze and it sounds wonderful. It was my best turntable and ran rings around my SL1700..... until I put a Garrot cart on the SL1700.

I'm going to have to swap over the carts just for interests sake and see how it changes their sound.

My DP47F is still my daily driver. A few years ago I put lead sheeting on the inside of the plinth. That and a lead/cork mat and I think it would have to be on top of the speaker to pick up feedback. I run a Denon 103r in it. A match made in Hi Fi heaven.
