Denon POA 3000 (just acquired, see pix), does anybody know this class A amplifier

I just got a denon POA 3000 poweramplifier. I was told it is 2 x 180W @ 8 ohms. It is a class A amplifier. I think it can't be 180W in class A, or is this possible?

Does anyone has experiences with this amplifier, I think I'm going to like it!!!

The amplifier weighs more than 65 pounds and the capacitors are 4 x 25000uF.

Can anyone give me more specs??

Orion list it as built between 80-83 at MSRP $2300 and 180 watts (90/chnl) Class A - now used retail $475 wholesale mint $275

By the way, very pretty amp.

I have the POA-2200, 200x2 amplifier. Very fine piece of gear.
It has eight big capacitors.

pete, yup no pix yet ... :p:

Wow thats a very nice little space heater you got there. Better keep the pets and little ones away from it. In Class A mode its gotta be HOT!!

It is Push-Pull design Single Ended Class A with 180WPC. I have one and it sounds superb when it's working. I have some issue with mine and now being completely overhauled with new output transistors.

Where did you buy it from if you don't mind me asking? It's a rare piece to come by. Congrats!

Is posting to an old thread faux pas? I thought it would be better than starting a new one.

I don't have a 3000 yet. I was looking at that one ebay. It is a beautiful piece and I just wondered how it sounded, what you all thought it was worth and if it was serviceable.

Nothing at all wrong in resurrecting an old thread. However, just remember that discussions of ebay auctions or questions regarding value should be posted in Dollars & Sense forum.

It's certainly no single ended Class A it's even not Push Pull Class A.
It's a rip-off from a Nelson Pass design the Threshold 800A one of the first offerings with so called sliding bias by which the quiescent current running through the powertransistors just keeps ahead of the signal and in theory the transistors always keep working in a lineair fashion without the negative side-effects of a standing bias Class A design like the Mark Levinson ML-2 or Classé Audio DR-3 or old Krells that have to burn off lots of heat because those amps always run at their maximum Class A output even when they're idling.
Krell later developed their own version the Plateau Biasing amps like the KSA-300s.
So the POA-3000 and the mono version of it the POA-8000 both used a form of sliding bias. Both amps do not like low impedences (I had a pair of POA-8000's) and do not sound like real high-end designs. Just good solid hifi gear that looks very nice though.
