Design Acoustics D-6... Yes or no?

Nobody special.
I have a chance to purchase some design acoustics D-6 speakers tomorrow. Has anyone ever heard these before? Supposedly, they are in great condition and are all original. The guy said he wants $150.00 for them... Is this to much? I know they are good speakers but that's about all I know. I'd appreciate some feedback. Thanks in advance, Greg :scratch2:

But take that as gospel, or as the opinion of an educated, but opinionated, and exuberant reviewer.

He loved this speaker, and so did many others. Needs a bit of placement thought in order to get proper bass- the passive radiator is on the back. Pull the grill off, and they'll look ugly- like a tweeter-pock-marked speaker. But it's the sound, man, the sound that's important.

Anyone and everyone I know who've picked them up has loved them. Not one has been dissappointed.

as for the price, that's average. Not a great price, but certainly not bad. Seem to sell for $150 or higher on a regular basis, if the person knows what they're selling- some as much as $275. Otherwise, they've snuck by at $40, $75, and a few other bargain prices.
 
I picked up a set of a former AKer last year and had them at my house for a while. I thought they sounded real good. Nice a clean and kind of modern in a crisp highs, scooped mids and full bass kind of way almost like a good satellite / sub system. That's a bit of an exaggeration but kind of the sound IMHO. The bass was a little one note but the top end was real nice. Overall a real good speaker.
 
I love mine. Number 2 in my stable these days. They just sound alive. Though 150 is big money in my world, I got mine for 10 bucks, if you have it I think you would think them worth it.
 
You could spend $150 on lots worse.

I could almost guarantee you'd get at least your money back on them, if not more.

what kind of music do you listen to?

Is that King Diamond or Turbonegro as your avatar?

I play mine through big JBLs- Pioneer HPMs would do it well too, maybe some Polk 7s or 10s.

The Design Acoustics will do it well, but I think they'd shine more with jazz and classical and folk and country.

I'd say do it if your musical tastes are wide. If you're more selective, and hard rock and the ilk are your bag, eaven though I'm a big east coast sound type of guy, I'd still put JBLs and HPMs higher up on my list.

Just my opinion.
 
I would buy these. I own a pair of D-6's and D-8's. I reguarly play these next to Ohm I's, Vandersteen 2ce's and Polk7b's. The D-6's are open and while some say have a bit of a problem with vocals around middle C, I haven't had that experience. They weren't the most well made speakers back then. But, Design Acoustics did something right, and even they may not have known it for sure. I listened to these in the 70's, bought them last year and haven't regretted it one bit.

That's Turbonegro in my avatar, and by the way, I do listen to them through a wall of JBL's. I can't stand King Diamond. My musical tastes are very diverse. Yesterdays play list included Ravel (Bolero), ELO, Ramsey Lewis, Zappa, Supersuckers, Stary Cats, Los Lobos, Dwight yoakam and alot more... I love listenig to eveything through my JBL's but I have alot of great speakers. I really don't need another pair and $150.00 Is alot of cheese. I don't know... I'm still undecided. I don't know what to do with all the speakers I have already. I'm leaning towards not getting them. I don't really feel like driving an hour each way to get them. Thanks for all your help guys. I salute your tastes. That's pretty diverse.

The D-6s are going to sound different than the JBLs, for sure.

These are very good speakers, but may not be to your liking.

Heck, it's a nice day in Cali (what day isn't), if you're inclined, give them a good listen, but it's tough to predict how you'll find them- if to your liking, or not.

If you make the trip, I wish you well. If not, there'll be others out there.

Now, off to play some Supersuckers for me...
