Diatone SS-600 - any good?

I live in Japan and noticed a pair of Diatone SS-600 speakers for sale in the local second hand shop.

Other than images on google I cannot find much information about these speakers.

The pair seem to be in pretty good condition including the drivers.

Should I try them out. I asked and they said they would be happy to let me bring an amp and give them a listen. I would be trying them out on a Cambridge Audio A300 V2. If I like them I would replace a pair of Mission 702e's.

Thoughts?

Cheers! :thmbsp:

Hard to say how they sound, but they look promising. Single tweeter and two woofers. It seems the US never got that model.
Maybe try them with your amp to see if you like them.

Yeah I am very nearly convinced I should try them out however am attached to the Mission's lol as I have had them many years.

Wife clearly expressed they have to go if I buy another set of big speakers :(

They are selling for a mere 7000 yen because of small tear in grille (not an issue)

I ended up buying them. After testing them out I found the highs to be very clear and detailed with no distortion the bass was a little lacking as the cones seem to be somewhat stiff.

I guess if they were left unused for years then the cones could get stiff or perhaps the previous owner didn't play past 9 o'clock? Break in/warm up? Otherwise I would say they are certainly better than the missions and in great condition.

So far I have used them for only 30 minutes and they seemed to have loosened up a bit already. I dare not approach louder volumes yet though. Should I continue playing at low volume for a few hours?

The famous Diatone D610 driver often sells for $400 a pair when you can find them.

It's coveted by the full range crowd and I'm considering it's less expensive clone that's sold on ebay.

I am not quite sure what you mean Poultrygeist. Do these speakers feature this D610 driver?

Do you have any advice for me concerning my previous questions :)

edit: are you saying I should invest $400 dollars which is huge money in new drivers?

Yes, there is a break-in period for speakers that have been sitting unused. I picked up a pair of small Celestions several years ago, that sounded horrid when I hooked them up. But I let them play over several days, and they completely transformed into great sounding speakers. The surround and spider stiffen up over time, and have to "loosen up" to sound their best. Kind of like when I've been sitting a long time. :D

Diatones have a great reputation. I'd love to hear a pair. Hell, I'd love to see a pair.

That is good to hear. This morning I have got them started on some Slightly Stoopid (lots of bass) dialed down input volume and cranked amp to 10 o'clock and full bass. Already noticing the drivers are getting much more elastic now. Should be a good match up. Amp is 50 wpc and the speakers are rated for max 50w.

I have to say these are very similar to the English RAM 200s I have back in the UK except the RAMs have a dome tweeter. They also feature a passive 8 inch ABR at the bottom driven by a larger dalesford magnet on the smaller 6 inch midrange. Also both are infinite baffle design. I am a great fan of those speakers hence I just couldn't bring them to Japan lol. I hope these sound as good!!
