Did someone say "Alnico!" ?

Thats a pretty hefty alnico on that woofer.

BUT on a alnico to woofer comparision: It doesnt compare to a CS 51 bookshelf speaker. Its got a huge magnet when compared to woofer size.

But still were talking about a 4 and some odd inches of woofer. On the CS 51

big ones...........

Howdy,
I have a pair of 16" Sonics woofers, most probably made by Coral/Pioneer,
that weigh in at 45lbs. pr., HUGE magnets, and the xover plate looks very
similar to your Pioneers.....Would be curious if there were some cross-
breeding on parts since Pioneer was supposedly related to Sonics.....T

There were two speaker companies with similar names - "Sonic" and "Sonics." One of them was the "cheap" division of Pioneer, but I never can remember which.

I found a Gold framed Norwegian-made DHL 12" alnico speaker, while vacationing in Vancouver, B.C.
It had an alnico magnet, the size of a coffee can!
Paid $15 for it, and brought it back to Maryland.
I made a rocking good guitar speaker cabinet for it, and gave it to my daughter's boyfriend, for his 18th birthday.
Like a UFO, it's been seen around Western Maryland, making strange noises?

Anyone ever seen the woofer from the Empire "Grenadier" column speakers made back in the 60's? I think it's got that Pioneer woofer beat by quite a bit. It's a 12" driver and the magnet is about 10" in diameter. The woofer alone weighs in at around 25+ pounds, maybe more. I know where a pair is sitting around, I'll have to dig it out and snap a pic - unbelievable!

Sonics Woofer

This is a photo of the 23lbs. Sonics woofer, when I unboxed these the
magnet pulled silverware of my kitchen counter.......Cheers,T

The Mighty Empire

This is what the woofer from an Empire 8000P column speaker looks like. It's a 12" woofer and at least a 10-11" magnet. You need two hands to hold it, it's heavier than it looks!

Would guess that the 30" EV might be able to contend here. Can't remember the magnet size... but, if it's proportionally bigger than the SRO EV woofers of the same era, it's a monster in itself.

Besides, 30" wins, just from the sheer cone size. :D

Gordon.
