Difference between Sansui 5050 and 6060

I have a 5050 that I just recapped and am very pleased with the sound of this 30 watts per channel unit (at 8 ohms). I have an opportunity to get a 6060 unit that needs some work --- that work is my hobby, it is not my job! Anyway, they both have the same front plate, same knobs, dial, etc. The driver board is the same is used in both except there are a couple of components installed on the 6060. I know the 6060 is 10 watts more per channel, but is that the difference? I don't know if I want to spend the money for the unit if it there is no significant difference sound-wise.

I don't know what the actual differences are between those two, but I do know that 10wpc is not noticeable unless you can tell the difference between 1db of volume. I can tell the difference (volume wise) between 3-4db, but no lower. Volume is a logarithmic function, it takes a doubling of power (wpc) to increase the volume by 3db. So even a receiver that is 2x the power of that 5050 will only play 3db louder before clipping sets in, all things being equal.

If this is what you do in your spare time you should rebuild the 6060 and see if they are different in any way. Keep the one that suits you. There are no more of these being made so there is that.

Well said, Knucklehead. I would use the receiver here in my living room, hooked up to a pair of Boston Acoustics A-150s. The 30 watts of the 5050 is plenty as it is now, but I might just get the 6060 to do the tinkering (replacing of parts) I like to do in my retirement years and see if there is a real difference between these two models. I was surprised at the clarity of the sound of the 5050, as well as the sensitivity of the tuner, much better than other separate tuners I have. By the way, the Owner's Manual is the same for both models (the Service Manuals are different). Thanks for your input! (And I like your modified Alfred E.)

Now I have to correct what I said about the Service Manual --- The same manual for the 5050 also covers the 6060. Not much difference there, except I noticed the power caps go from 4700uf (5050) to 6800uf (6060). There is some difference, but not enough for me to spend the extra bucks to pay for cost of the 6060 and then recap it and whatever else it needs. 6060 supposedly makes 14 wpc more plus has buttons for high and low filters that the 5050 lacks but no one uses them anyway so it's whateva

Early 5050

Sooopa, Thanks for those pictures of both the 5050 & 6060 and their changes. I'm glad to seen them, especially the 6060 and to compare what I have in my 5050 which is a later version. Great pictures!

I wondered about that, MWH901. The driver board on the 5050 has a few empty spots where caps would be for the 6060. The 6060 I had a shot at is gone so I'm not too upset about it but I might come across another one.

The difference between the Sansui 6060 and 5050 is the supply voltage of the output transistors as shown in this figure from the service manual.

Sansui 5050 +33V/-33V (30 watts @ 8 ohms)
Sansui 6060 +37V/-37V (40 watts @ 8 ohms)
