Dirty KR-9600 restoration tips please

Just picked up my first vintage receiver, a rack mount Kenwood KR-9600. It’s pretty much covered in a thick layer of dust and not sure whether I should clean it up before firing it up. On that note I’m also not sure how best to clean it up. What’s the best way to get the dust and grime off the internals? Is it safe to wipe it down? This will be my first attempt at any type of restoration so I’m very much open to advice.

Either compressed air and a small brush to dislodge stubborn dust. Or a vacuum and a brush. To get the bulk of the dust. Then use q-tips and alcohol for the finer detailing.

I use both methods. Air compressor dialed down to 25 psi outside weather permitting. Or vacuum when weather is not cooperating.

Yes.. But the potential is there to blow dust deep into controls and switches or even break the more fragile IF cans from tuner assemblies. Gots to be extremely careful.
