DIY Remote controlled Power box

I'm thinking of building a relay box that will be triggered from a switched outlet on a remote controlled preamp. Use a 30amp spa relay #10 cord and hospital grade outlets. Any thoughts or suggestions. Cautions or ways to avoid any problems.

120VAC coil. Snubber across the relay contacts to minimize damage from arcing; be sure to use an X rated cap.

Can't use a diode on AC coil.

I ordered this relay http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/5Z538 I'm wondering if I should put a cap or diode across the coil to absorb any inductive spike when the coil field colapses. Does a ac coil have an induced voltage when turned off like a dc relay? Does it matter?

You can't use a standard diode on an AC powered relay coil, (MAYBE back to back Zieners?) a capacitor\resistor series combination may work.

The diode is usually used on a DC coil driven by an IC or transistor, the diode kills the reverse spike and prevents destruction of the IC or transistor driving the relay coil.

This ac relay is actually going to be driven by another relay in the preamp. I don't want to send anything back into the preamp or tuner that I have hooked up to another of the switched outlets. Would an x cap be enough? I could have bought a Furman relay box and a trigger box to plug into the pre but that would have cost 150.00 or so. I figured I could do it better and cheaper and put it in a nice oak case.

What about a regular diode in series on the line side of the coil. Wouldn't that force any turn off kick to ground on the neutral side???

To avoid a fire risk put it all in a aluminum BUD box or chassis and then attach some nice oak panels to it. You don't want to have to explain your creation to the insurance company.

Relay arrived this after noon so I recyced an old switch box. Total cost 50.00 seems to work fine. Relay is loud when cycled though.
