Do the Police have automatic forward and rear facing plate readers?

I would like knowing everyone has insurance.
I would too but several years ago I heard a report on the local news that claimed more than 25% of the drivers on the road here was driving uninsured which I guess basically means as I watch cars zipping up and down the state highway I can see from my living room, every 4th one has no insurance. Believe me they add up in a hurry if you sit and watch.
We are required proof of basic liability insurance to tag our vehicles so I don't understand how that every 4th car I see gets around it.
Not that I'm going to try but it sure makes me wonder.
And also, before I forget, I'm going to venture here a little and say - of that 25% more than likely 75-80% of those would be what your attorney would would tell you: 'Have an inability to pay...'
in the event one of them plows into you.

Simple. Buy an insurance policy, get the proof card, renew your registration, then cancel the policy and get a refund.

In my state (FL.) insurance companies are required to notify the DMV when somebody pulls that stunt !
And I guess the information get`s into their database, so the LEO`s have access to it when they run a persons tag, at least that`s what my recently retired LEO long time friend advised me several yrs ago.

Oregon has color coded stickers front and back. As well as a color coded year sticker front and back.

^^This is what I've been told also happens here^^ and was actually why I didn't mention it. I have heard that there is more than a casual relationship between insurers and the DMV which doesn't surprise.
Could've been my initial query was understated.

Absolutely...especially in states with annual vehicle and emissions inspections. That's how insurance companies know your mileage driven yearly for policies on historic cars and us seniors low mileage discounts.

Oklahoma has no vehicle emissions/ safety inspection anymore which I don't really miss yet on the flip side of that, you wouldn't believe what I see rolling down the road some days.

An abuse of good electronics..

Being a "boomer" :blah:.. I just would like to know why my tax dollars are going towards "arbitrary enforcement". If I helped pay for those police cars with those type of gizmos, I also want the following:

  • Instant monitoring and tracking of ankle bracelet violators not conforming to their limited movement.
  • "Babies on Board" warning system for babies not fastened in their seatbelts while on board.
  • Trash throwers tracker that identifies and fines, whether incidental (pickups) or accidental, onto public roadways.
  • The lethargic or exhausted driver, "high anxiety retina scan" H.A.R.S.
With this type of capability and enforcement, I won't complain if pulled over for not paying "the government", on time.

Your point?

serious? ok, assuming you are not taking the piss....

You do not own the road. You may have rights to walk on public roads, but you have no rights to drive on public roads. however permission is temporarily given if you meet some standards of compliance. registration, inspection, insurance etc etc are those standards for the car. drivers licensure and training are the standards for YOU. A LEO may view the proof of each compliance at any time they wish. they may use a machine if they wish. Today is the day of big data and companies are tying together all related data. run a plate, you get back the d/l photos of EVERYONE at that address and or on the reg card. for the same reason that LEOs are allowed to search at any time, a home for weapons, lived in by a felon, they may stop at any time, a vehicle connected to a suspended driver.

this is long settled law and arguments against it read like 'alternate tax law theory' - which of course never works.

more cop cars show up when 1 stops a car full of people? its called backup and that one is paved with blood.

?? is that a legal term??

I accept my responsibility for paying registration fees and following the law. If a scanner caught me, I would have a reaction not dissimilar to the OP but I would comply and move on. The OP has a contrarian opinion which is fine. I suggest the OP retain an attorney and investigate challenging enforcement practice.

I said wrong because I got ticketed for intentionally defacing the plate for cost of $1,105 when the only times I've ever laid hands on it was to put it on the car in 2002, and when the annual registration stickers had to be updated. The CHP office had ZERO reason to suspect I modified or damaged it but he went that route anyway.

He may have had the option of writing a fix-it ticket that I could have resolved easily with a trip past the DMV but if so that didn't come up, he jumped right to the "F YOU" ticket instead. And it wasn't because I was giving him any attitude, either. I am unfailingly polite when being detained on the side of the road for ANY reason. I was mostly confused about what he was talking about and why he thought I was some kind of criminal.

Your response suggested that my description of what happened and the ticket I received were something other than what I posted, but that's not the case regardless of what your buddy says.

As posted here" https://audiokarma.org/forums/index...ing-plate-readers.954927/page-5#post-14673543, there is obviously some pattern of this in the state despite what your CHP friend has told you. Then again, I wouldn't expect them to talk publicly a lot about that kind of revenue opportunity. As to making it public myself, I have whenever possible including here or sharing with other drivers if I notice that condition on their plates which happens all the time. Local news didn't apparently care enough to cover it, but in California we're pretty used to getting bent over by Sacramento these days.

John

why you telling me wrong? I just asked TODAY, and active duty CHP officer. If you have some different insight, shouldnt it be made public? if you intentionally deface the plate to avoid traffic cameras....now that is a different story - be advised, chp is now making use of RFID scans, phone pings, and pings into the 'secret port' almost every automaker puts in the cars now to identify WHO went thru the light////
