Does this stylus look 'right' to you?

That could be referring to shipping of the replacement being free. Do you think they should cover shipping for your return and the replacement?

Leaving the shipping charges out of the new one would sort of cover the return postage, unless I'm confused.

I messaged the seller about it yesterday and got a refund for an answer, no questions asked :gigglemad

Edit: Oh and s/he expects me to send it back out of my own pocket. Does this sound wrong to anyone else?

So, just order a second one from them and tell them if they want the original back they can foot the postage....

Have you considered moving on and going with a different vendor?

I certainly could, but I really would like to have one of these styli. Like I said, as far as I could judge it, it sounded great. But yeah, I'll give it a few more days and then probably just drop it (but they're not getting their defective stylus back [whatever they want it for] out of my pocket!).

[whatever they want it for]

The reason they want it back is simple accounting, and the probability that they would in turn seek refund from their supplier or the manufacturer for a clearly defective part.

It does look like the seller has tried to do right by you, however I certainly get where you're coming from on your stance regarding the shipping from your pocket. I'd be pissed about that too.

I'm just not really certain that you'll get anything satisfactory from the same supplier.... Your stylus is commonly available enough that shopping around different vendors might be wiser..... You might end up paying a touch more, but you might have a little more assurance of a good stylus than that with a vendor that you've already identified through experience as having sold you a dog.

Just my thoughts. Best of luck.

If the price of the item was low, which an aftermarket most likely was, sending it back does not seem practical from anyone's perspective. It is not like they could repair this or resell it. Even getting credit from their supplier might not be possible. If they have refunded you with no other explanation or communication than just walk away and shop elsewhere.

I bought a similar stylus for a Realistic R9000e, essentially a Shure 95, and the first one I bought was obviously the wrong design and also defective. The cantilever was so weak the cartridge bottomed out. The vendor did not ask for it back, and as I still wanted a stylus, they sent me another model and I simply paid the difference which was about $10. It works great and I am happy.

Here's what I would do......

I'd contact the seller and tell them that I'm going to buy another of these styli and, if the seller is interested in being the source for it, s/he would do well to abide by the published policy of paid return shipping. Otherwise, there's no lack of other vendors in eBay selling the same styli (assuming it's a Pfanstiehl or EVG) for the same money. Pretty straightforward and simple.

If the seller remains firm, just move on. Then it would be up to the seller to come after you through eBay or PayPal for the return off the defective stylus. Frankly, though, I don't see that happening because of the return policy. All you'd need to do would be to tell the arbitrator that you had already agreed to return it, and still would, under the seller's return policy.

Done and done!

John

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I'm not much of an Ebayer and hadn't had any issues so far, so this is very useful.

re: the seller returning the stylus to their supplier - this is clearly NOS from the '80s or so, so that would be unlikely. This looks like someone who bought a lot of replacement styli from some place that was closing down and is now selling them - but they don't seem to know much about them.

These are pictures of the packaging, btw, which I had forgotten to include:

Well, s**t happens, as they say - sometimes even on major brand original needles. For example, a German forum aquaintance of mine once got an AT95E, on which the diamond was rotated by ~ 45°. That's why I always, always, always (!) check new carts/needles under the loupe, before letting these anywhere near to my records...

Greetings from Munich!

You just made me remember this phrase, regarding Quality Control:

"Monday is always Monday... even in Germany!"

Welp, last try. Not expecting much at this point, but hey--

"Hello. You still haven't contacted me back about this. I have been looking at your return policy and it very clearly states "Refunds will be given as money back. The seller pays for return shipping."

I appreciate the no-questions-asked refund but I will not post the stylus back out of my own pocket. That would amount to 3-4€ easily, when the whole purchase was 10€. If I did that I would be out of a product and out of almost HALF what I paid for it.

Here's what I suggest: I still need one of these styli. I can either get it from you, or from some other seller (of which there are many). I already know the ones you're selling are good quality - I just happen to have got a bad one. So, I'm going to buy another one from you. IF you would like me to return the defective one (not sure what you might want it for, since it's unrepairable and unusable and might even ruin records, but your call), then send me an invoice for the price of the new stylus WITHOUT shipping - that covers the return postage of the old one and I will send it over. Otherwise, just sell me a new one charging full price + shipping and I'll keep the defective one (which is no use to me either).

Whichever you prefer but PLEASE get back to me, it's a bit tiresome to write and write and get no response.

THANKS."

So several days go by with no answer, and suddenly another one-liner: "refund already sent..return needle; check your paypal account".

Have they even read my messages at all I wonder? F-- them . I'm forgetting about this, stylus stays here until further notice.

"Like I said, I'm not paying for return shipping on a defective item. You've refunded me exactly the amount I paid. If you want me to return the stylus, which I do not mind, then either agree to selling me another one with NO shipping charges (to make up for return shipping) OR refund me the return postage as well. Otherwise the stylus stays here, although I've no use for it (it is UNUSABLE and will RUIN RECORDS). Your return policy very clearly says

What is the return policy?

Accepts returns. Items must be returned within: 14 days. Refunds will be given as money back. The seller pays for return shipping."

That's it as far as I'm concerned. Rgds."

Get Ebay and paypal involved if that's where you bought it. If that's what it states, then Ebay and paypal should back you up, especially if you have the emails and acct. balances to back up your non-receipt of return shipping.

Oh, I don't need to. Unless the seller keeps demanding that I send it back. As far as I'm concerned, it's over - I have my money back and I cannot use the stylus, but I'm basically back where I started. They've already given feedback (+), I haven't, and don't plan on - I could slap them a negative but it's the same at this point, really. I'll take my business elsewhere and be done with it. Thanks for putting up with me, everyone ;).

Well, all of a sudden someone else seems to have taken over the controls - a few days after having given up on them I got this reply, out of the blue:

"Hi! Please do not worry about sending the defective item back. I hesitate to send you another one, as they are all identical. It would probably be in your best interest to obtain one from another seller who may have a different batch. Please accept my apologies for any hassles with this transaction. Thanks!

Kind regards,"

Not bad. I wonder what was up with the other replies .

one thing bothers me .it says "genuine" on the packaging .. i cant recall that being written on on any genuine item i have bought . just the makers name and logo .
