I have a rough idea of what my gear's worth, because I paid for it. But that's it.
The vintage market prices by their nature are all over the map. I've (we) seen 1250s sell from 150 to over a grand. . .I have personally sold 850s for over 600 bucks and as little as 300 for one of a kind true mint pieces. I've paid from 25 bucks to over 600 bucks for 850s that you could not tell apart. . .
I've seen SX-1010s sell from 50 bucks to my high of 1000.00 for the mint one I had that EW went through in a major way. I've sold Sansui receivers and amps with the same variation in price. I think all of us have seen those extremes in just about every brand and model. . .
I have no interest in what someone might think one that I'm selling might be worth unless that person happens to be the buyer.
I have not sold near as much the last year or so because I kinda got burnt out on vintage stereo and concentrated on new or near new HT gear while upgrading my system. Still a good description, great pictures and timing have everything to do with price. I hated putting a price tag on anything I owned because that might limit what I might get at auction for the same piece.
Sometimes I was way out of line either higher or lower than what the piece actually sold for. I will tell you this however there is a huge market for true mint turn key systems. I still have a waiting list of buyers who are willing to pay top dollar for certain Pioneer Receivers in the right condition. So far I haven't seen that receiver this year. There are scoodles of daily drivers in good shape but the true one of a kind pristine pieces are getting harder and harder to find.
My point is this. . . People can ask all they want but the answers are mostly meaningless without the expertise to go with it if you expect to get that extreme money. Not many people are willing to do everything it takes to sell gear at those prices certainly the scammer is not going to carefully build a reputation that it takes to get it done. He might burn a person or two but I think we all know who has the best gear that we would be willing to pay those amounts to. . . I'm sure each one of us might know one or two sellers that we would trust to give us what we paid for.
I know I will not get burnt buying high dollar stereo gear because I do not buy anything unless I know the buyer period regardless of how much I want it or how rare it might be. I don't care if it looks absolutely perfect and everything seems in order I will not buy it unless I know the seller or unless I know someone that I trust with my life that knows that seller and also trusts him with his life.
It does not bother me in the least what help some newbie or scammer might want because at the end of the day it really means nothing. I know I'm safe in what I buy and I sure as hell know my buyer will be safe as well. Any other transaction is meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
