Don't buy New Large Advent foam surrounds from simplyspeakers

Man, I'm such a dolt. I ordered some new foam surrounds from simplyspeakers for my New Large Advents (A4). They show up. I finally get around to getting all the old foam off the woofers (that was a bitch, that glue if tough stuff).

Last night, start glueing the new foam surrounds to the cones. Get them centered, everything looks great. During the drying period, I am just eyeballing the foam surrounds and it looks like the foam goes up a little higher on the metal frame than I remembered from when removing the old foam.

So, I take a look at some photos I snapped before I started. Sure enough, it looks different. Do some more searching, find a couple threads on here about it. Thankfully I don't have the foam glued onto the metal frame yet, but its definitely glued to the cones. Jeez!!

Anyway, just to reinforce this point for people in the future, the surrounds that simplyspeakers sells for 10" New Large Advents are NOT CORRECT. The roll is much smaller and there is way too much extra foam on the outer edge of the surround. It simply does not fit and is not the right size/shape. I wrote them a fairly stern email about it, because they really should not be selling these. Don't make this mistake. I re-ordered the correct foam surrounds.

Anyone ever accidentally glued some new foam onto speaker cones and then had to remove it the next day? Any special advice?

MEK should dissolve the new foam & glue from the back of your speaker cones.
I use it to clean off the OLD foam & glue when I am redoing speakers ... get it in a metal can from Home Depot (like turpentine).
Well ventilated -Outside use ONLY - its very NASTY

Assuming you used something like Aleen's (sp?), you should be able to use water to get the glue to soften up enough to peel off the surround. I'd apply with a cotton swab, let it soak a little while, then separate the foam from the cone. Fresh glue is much easier to deal with than the 30 year old stuff.

What is MEK?

What is MEK?

Methyl Ethyl Ketone, a pretty stiff solvent. With the paint thinners and other solvents at any hardware store or lumber yard. Good stuff, but it will give you a buzz after a bit. Essentially Acetone or very similar.

Not good if you're getting that much vapor. MEK is very bad for your lungs and can cause ketosis.

It is a wonderfully effective solvent, but the health threats are real and can't be over-emphasized.

Yep - MEK is harsh stuff - but very effective for some of the glue JBL used on their drivers -
its what I used on my 2214H and 2235 speakers - and like I said -
I use it Outside ONLY -
well ventilated indoors isn't enough -
its very NASTY ...

You want the correct foam- get hold of John @ MSound. He sells the correct "fay" foam for the Advents no problems.

What about Goof Off?

Also, I was able to pry the foam off a speaker after a few hours. Very slowly and carefully, with an X-Acto knife.

Thanks for the tips, folks. I am hopeful that the new glue will soften up. Sucks that the foams are glued to the underside of the cone, that's a bitch to get at.

Just FYI, it's not ALL the foams that simplyspeakers sells. They are just clearly selling the wrong foams for New Large Advents. And, they refunded my money today. They acknowledged that I was sent the wrong foams despite my actually taking the time to send them a comment with my order specifically asking for them to please ensure these are the right foams for A4 NLA's. I thought that was a pretty stand up move on their part to refund my money on the spot.

I ordered the right ones from Rick Cobb. Thanks Rick!

Just out of curiosity, if the foam outer edge is bigger, could we not trim them to fit on the basket if foam material is same?

I've had great luck with Rick Cobb on all my JBL surrounds ...
I've always glued the foams to the back of the JBL speakers I've redone,
at least those models came attached to the back of the speaker cone (multiple 2214H, 3 2235, etc)

The roll size and surround stiffness are the other two issues that need to be correct for Advents.

Sounds like Simply Speakers did an outstanding job to correct their error.
Maybe you should change the title of this thread.

I've had good luck with Simply Speakers and used their stuff to do a set of NLA's a couple of years before... quick delivery / worked great . AK is important to these vendors ........ I think you might consider re - Titling your thread..... since they remedied their error immediately ... can't ask for more than that.

Go to flea-bay and look up Looneytunes for the correct surrounds. They are the proper size and foam density. They made my Advents sound like new.:thmbsp:
