Drive belt size for a Tascam 122?

Hi folks

I scored a Tascam 122 (the original version) which made me happy. Fwd and Rev work fine, but the drive belt for play had fallen to pieces (at least it didn't glue itself to anything, so that's something).

I don't want to shell out on a big kit of belts, and I was hoping to be able to buy just the one belt that I need from somewhere like www.ceitron.com, studiosoundelectronics.com or wjoe.com.

The snag is - all those places want you to measure your old belt, which I can't do because it's in pieces.

So, if somebody who knows the correct size would help me out, I'd be very grateful.

The capstan belt quality determines how much wow/flutter (speed distortion) your deck has. Try to buy the original belt from Teac for best performance. Most other replacement belts will degrade your deck's wow/flutter.

If they don't have the belt, then email Marrs Communications to see if they have one for your model. It will not a good as a Teac belt, but close.

I would suggest contacting TEAC/TASCAM here in SoCal and find out if they still stock and sell the factory belt. No point in looking for a replacement if a factory belt is still available, IMO.

Otherwise, email Marrs Communications at inquiry@marrscom.com and see if he stocks a belt for your original Tascam 122, not the Mk II or later model.

Thanks, folks.

I've filled out a parts request with Teac/Tascam and will report back when I get a reply. If no joy there, I'll try Marrs Communications.

Well, I heard back from Tascam. They have it for $8 + $5 shipping + tax = $13.81 to me, So I guess I'll go ahead and get the proper thing, rather than a Chinese copy. It's part number 5800063100, for the next person who goes looking and finds this thread.

Tapetech - what's the other belt and do you think I ought to get one of those too?

Interestingly, the reply also said this:

We are required to collect state sales tax for residents of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, Minnesota and others, regardless of shipping point.

Do TEAC/TASCAM really have a bricks and mortar presence in that many states?

Definitely get the Teac belt for lowest speed distortion (wow).

Get the other belt as well. I think it's a counter belt.

Thanks again, tapetech. My earlier googling did turn up some assertions that when the counter belt fails, the auto-stop will engage. So, while the counter is running fine right now, I'll take a look at the belt and if there's any doubt as to its soundness I might as well get another belt for it, since I'll be paying the shipping anyway.

Allowing for shipping & Thanksgiving, I hope to report back in the next week or two.

You should see if Teac has a new pinch roller and idler tire (idler wheel).

Often when the belts fail, the other rubber parts are soon to fail as well.
