In the upgrade mode, I have begun to look at some fairly nice DVD players for use as a transport for CD playback and have found a number of them that appear to have only DTS audio output via the digital coaxial output. Will this work/sound ok going into my 2 channel stand alone DAC? or do I need to look for something else? Stand alone CD audio transports seem to be out of my price range on the whole.

I am not aware of any outboard DACs that decode DTS. And, most, if not all, DVD players will output 2 channel audio via optical or coaxial digital outputs. Share the make/models you are looking at and we can confirm this for you.

Nope. Won't work. If the output is DTS bitstream then you'll need something with a DTS decoder. The typical audio DAC only works with 2-ch PCM signal to the optical or coaxial input.

You may want to find the manual for the players you're looking at to see if the bitstream output can be set PCM.

Is there a specific model player you had in mind?

Both Toshiba models definitely can be set to output PCM.

I'd expect the Pioneer can too as I've not yet seen one that couldn't, but have not personally confirmed it.

Thanks guys for the responses. I will see what shopping brings and will take your word on it whoaru99 that all Toshibas can output PCM.

I've never seen a DVD player that could not out put 2 channel digital signal from the coax and toslink outputs for CD playback. But, that doesn't mean one doesn't exist.
