Dual 1009SK Score

Snerp

I solder while you sleep...
I'm pretty sure I got a CL score today!

Dual 1009SK without dust cover, but in a snazzy custom built cabinet. Along with it came 3 heads, a Sure M44-7, Sure R47XT, a GE cart that looks like it is for the earlier style records and a Pickering XSV 3000. This set me back $65.

I'm guessing that's about $100-150 of carts and about $90 for the turntable? Not looking to sell anything at the moment, just would like some proof that I'm not crazy for my girlfriend.

Playing my GW found Led Zeppelin II right now. It's a little too crackly, but hopefully I'll get everything cleaned up and dialed in. This is my first personal venture into a turntable. Any tips or guides around?

Dang, the headshells alone are worth about $50/each!

Even more good news! :)

They didn't know what they had and I didn't know what everything was until I got it home. I just grabbed it, put it in my vehicle and drove away as quickly as possible.

I saw some info about needing to lube some parts. Anyone know of a good servicing guide?

Those things are pretty complicated. Your best bet is to ask specific questions here and take photos as you disassemble, so that you can figure out how to put everything back correctly.

I guess what I am asking is what would a service technician do if I were to take the TT in for a tune up? I am comfortable with with repairing electronics. I am recapping a receiver at the moment. I just want to get everything cleaned up and sounding pretty.

Should I use deoxit on all the connections? I read something about an idler drive neesing lube. Maybe that was another model?

Heres a guide for 1219/1229 http://akdatabase.com/AKview/displayimage.php?album=103&pos=0
You have a much earlier tt, so you have to apply common sense here, the basic concept will be the same, with fewer parts, etc. Obviously any measurements will be null and void. This is just to help you get a feel for what to look for and what to lube etc.
Dont bother looking for a steurpimpel, you dont have one.
If you head over to VinylEngine.com you can register with them for free and then have access to their library. If they dont have your model specific service manual, then there will be something close model-wise I would bet.

This is completely different from repairing electronics. This is a mechanical beast, so basic mechanical knowledge is required. Old grease needs to be removed and sparingly replaced with a high speed machine oil. The motor needs to be opened up and upper and lower bearings oiled. The headshells need to be re-built by epoxying the contacts in place, and replacing the 4 cartridge wires. The tonearm needs to be opened up and the bearings cleaned - the old grease has frozen up. We go back with dry bearings, as did later Duals. A spanner wrench and a lot of experience is required here - definitely not something to learn on.

I should just bow out and let a pro at it then? I am really good at repairs as long as I have something to go off of. I just replaced the alternator in my car yesterday with vague instructions.

If it is really something to be left to a pro, I understand. How much would a tune up set me back? Do you think anyone would be interested in some of the extras as trade for the work? If someone would be interested in trading, which carts should I plan on keeping?
