Dual 1209

Hello,
I'm concerned about a little bit of hum that happens when I bring the tonearm over to start the platter movement. It's quite when everything is powered up and the tonearm is on its rest. I've checked the ground wire and the cartridge seems to be correct to the head shell.
Asking if this is normal for this tt or any suggestions to correct if not.
The system is a Dual 1209 connected to a Sanusi 9090.
Thank you.

You didn't mention what cartridge you're using. Grados are known to cause hum with certain turntables. You definitely have a ground issue somewhere. If all else fails, contact Bill aka Bohhey at Fix My Dual. He could walk you through the steps over the phone. If it happens you need a part to fix this issue, he has the biggest parts inventory for Dual tables.

I hope this helps!

I'll call Bill, he actually re-condition the tt for me. Thought somebody might come up with something I'm missing.
Btw, It has Sure cartridge on it.
Thanks for the reply.

When it was reconditioned was the tonearm rewired? There's a strong possibility the old double sheath wiring Dual used has developed a fault.

Hi,

Some older turntables short out the cartridge wires for utterly no hum
and noise when the arm is moved to its rest. Its disingenuous, as it
generally prevents you investigating the optimum wiring for low
noise, if you don't know that the turntable is actually doing that.

You can tell if its the case by cleaning the stylus on the arm rest.
If no noise comes through at all then this is definetely the case.

rgds, sreten.

It hums the most when I'm holding on to the headshell or even the tonearm now, and even when it's on the rest. Not much hum till im physically holding on to it. wiring issue in the tone arm??
Thanks for you guys help.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the cartridge carrier? I've had some that didn't ground properly and would produce hum when I touched the head shell or tone arm. Good idea too to clean the cartridge pins, tone arm wire connectors and contact points on the cartridge holder and tone arm.

It could be a different issue but this is a good place to start.

Would you be kind enough to suggest how to clean the small brass contacts?

Deoxit is effective but sometimes it takes something abrasive to remove the tarnish. Does your cartridge sled have sprung pins or flat brass contacts. I've very carefully cleaned them with a pencil eraser. You want the brass to be bright and shiny.
