Dual 1249???

So a kinda family member asks me today if I knew anyone who wanted a TT. I said I was interested in getting my first TT. He says I'll bring it by your place tomorrow. It's a Dual 1249. He says he "synchronized" it or something like that and it works great. He didn't say anything else about it. Is this a good first table? Anything I should know about these? Now I just need some vinyl! :music:

Decent first table, as long as the plastic collar for the tonearm isn't busted (lifts the tonearm assy for multiplay). The early models had motor problems (platter runs at 2x normal speed).

It's a mechanical monster underneath, and I'm sure it's full of old hardened grease. They always need a good cleaning and lube (by someone who knows what they're doing).

Yes, very nice Dual belt drive (their first belt drive as a matter of fact).

It's been years since I've seen one (except on pictures) but I'm sure they have a pitch (speed) adjustment.

Just clean the belt every once in a while.

I bet others know a lot more about this particular model than I do. I'm more of a BIC guy :^)

I think maybe I'll call around and see what a going through would cost. What can I expect to pay? Any suggestions from local guys? Fred's, Echo....(echo):D ? Thanks for the replies :thmbsp:

AK member Bohhey is a Dual wizard (Des Moines, IA). But shipping a Dual is no party. Expert packing is mandatory.

I've been running my Dual 1249 since I bouight it new in 1975. I had it reconditioned about 15 months ago by a fellow AK'er locally for $50. I then bought a Grado Blue and it works like a charm. Good luck with yours.

All 1249 motors are bad. As are 601, some 502's and others. The bad one is the SM-840. Intermittantly spins at double speed - on 110V only - 220 V is fine. Replacement is the SM-860. Motors have tags, but the windings case on the 840 is black and on the 860 is a flat orange.

Thanks for all the help guys...... yesterday didn't happen, I should have it in hand today. I have a shelf with a slab of granite ready to go! :thmbsp:
I sure hope it comes in working order. If not, I can't complain. :D
But it sounds like I may have some work to do.

if it's free, like it sounds, take it and run. you can always fix the problems, if any, later.

Yeah boy, I agree with this! :thmbsp:

One thing I forgot to say above is that it is also a gorgeous table! :tresbon:

I also have a 1249, bought it about a year ago on ebay. It does'nt look like it's had much use, not a scratch anywhere even the dust cover is scratch free.

Do you have any hum with your Grado. I tried a Grado green and had a slight bit of a hum.

Bought a 1249 new years ago. Traded it for a Marantz 6250, mistake, not that the Marantz was bad, just was not an improvemt. Used a Sonus Blue cartridge at first, then a Shure V15II, both worked well.
