Dual 601 repair, tune up and lovin'

You can certainly use spider adapters or even the OEM Dual adapter if you place masking tape on the sharp edge. I filled mine with silicon caulking that stands a bit proud above the edge.

I have a metal 45RPM adapter from a SL-1200, it's sorta become a good luck charm to have on my deck's. Might add a little bead of silicone on it to set it off the platter, thanks for the idea!

More updates, Painted the Dual badge and found a replacement speed selector switch.

How to safely remove the speed selector switch on a 601 (I suspect this is how it gets broken)

If you're a lazy get like me and don't want to remove the motor start buy carefully pulling the belt off.

Undo the small nut on the pitch control knob shaft, remove the gear and pull the knob out.

Note for reassembly: order of parts from right to left.

Next removing the 'speed selector plate?'

First, look under the motor and you will see a bent piece of metal that acts as a spring, carefully push that off the tab on the speed selector plate and remove it, (Note: there's a pin on the selector plate that aligns with a slot on the shaft that goes under the motor, make sure that you slot that pin back into the slot on the shaft.) Undo the big nut to the top of the bushing then press down on it, the bushing should push out then you can remove the nut and pull the bushing all the way out.

Pull the speed selector plate off and then you'll see the bottom of the speed selector switch, you can now carefully pull it out, best to rotate it slightly on an angle to pull it out of the slot it sits in.

After that reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.

Wish like hell I had this thread back when I actually owned a Dual 601. That thing was uhhhmayyyzing with an M95-EJ Shure.

Miss that table. It ended up forgotten and smashed by a buddy whom I gave it to.

They're great little turntables aren't they? really underrated. Mine sounds great with my Audio Technica AT 413.

Another update, after I thought I was done, the one preventative maintenance job I neglected to do because it requires removing the tonearm came back to bite me in my pooper... Replacing the tone arm lift damping fluid. Man what a pita, especially the tiny clips on the lifter itself, I have no idea how I got them off without them goin' springin' spronin' everywhere is beyond me. Anywho I managed to do it and now it drops nice and softly instead one day 'no drop at all' and the other 'hah no damping at all' causing my stylus to hit the record and skate across the lead in grooves...

Cleaned off the old goop with some isopropyl, a old cloth and a Q-tip then applied a liberal amount of fresh 500,000cst silicone damping fluid using a syringe and pumping it into the tube and squeezing the excess out with the 'piston' (the part that lifts the tonearm), be sure not to be too conservative or you may end up with too little damping, ask how I know...

Nice 'n smooth now.

I'm well aware that someday will have to service the lift on my 601 too. But have been putting it off for the same reasons you mention (not so excited about messing with the tone arm assembly).
Great to see that you succeeded, Eastham! Might give it a shot....

It's not terribly hard, just finicky. Make sure you mark the alignment of the silver plate before removing it.

So this thread pops up again. Makes me miss my 601. Well atleast it's with friends of mine so I can see it now and then :-).
