I've been looking for a record player for the last few weeks, potentially got a good deal on this one - Dual 606, broken plastic cover, don't know condition of cartridge or stylus (prob buy new ones anyway). Buyer only wants $25 however.

Anyone know how good a TT this is?

I found it here, but no info about price new

Very very good TT

It has MULTIPLE pluses going for it. The EDS 500 motor (direct drive )is silent and rock solid. It has an ultra low mass arm (ULM) and also has a double dampening system in the counterweight...meaning this arm was made with high compliance in mind...

It is also a floating suspension table...

Great table, the only drawback like some others, the base is plastic...uggg..I made a wood base for mine...but bottom line, YOU WILL LOVE IT....Go for it

And if you want a dustcover, I'll sell you mine cheap''' :D

Great, thanks.:thmbsp: I figure $25 seems like a steal even without a dustcover. In the picture it seemed like it had a wood plinth, but maybe not, if not that will be my next DIY...

It's definitely worth $25, BUT...

Be aware that this TT uses a unique mounting system. I own a 508, which has the second-generation ULM arm, yours is a year older and a bit different. If you want to keep the (excellent) original Ortofon cartridge, styli are still available.

If, however, you want to install another, conventional mount, cartridge, you'll need an adapter plate which is pretty hard to find. The adapter plate for my series is next to impossible to locate, the one for the 606 is a bit easier.

Nothing wrong with the ULM 55e fitted, though...

(Be aware that the ULM-55e is NOT the same as a TKS-55e)

EDIT: If the previous owner has already changed out the cartridge, then you've already got the plate and you're home free!

If the original cartridge is good and I can still get syli I think I'll stick with that (although it depends what the seller has)
Definitely going to pick this up after work if you guys think this is a good one, most of the TT's I see on craigslist are usually $100 or more. People don't sell vintage cheap very often where I live

The ULM arm is problematic, but I have a 604 and think it's great. Mine uses a common cartridge shell.

Just

Just so happens...i have a 606 adapter to go along with that dustcover for u...pm me..

Hey, so I bought the turntable, the guy was selling a nice 70s era Technics receiver for $20 but he had no info on it such as watts per channel etc and I didn't really need one (I will regret not getting it most likely)... If any of you are in the Long Beach, CA area I can show you the ad if you're interested, seemed like a good deal.

Well I plug in the turntable and there is a massive hum... I guess I have to connect the ground?:scratch2: Lol, I'm a complete noob with turntables, well that fixed the issue, but after playing a few tracks on my one vinyl album the sound quality started deteriorating somewhat, getting kind of muffled and scratchy, I think maybe I need a new stylus... Can anyone identify what is on this cartridge wise? Probably stock. It sounded really good at first, much better than the CD I have of the same album (radiohead - In Rainbows)

The plinth is wood (cheapy chipboard I think) and covered in this really cheap and horrible looking plasticky vinyl, maybe down the line I will take it off and veneer it. Or make a new plinth.

Good table you scored. Half Inch adapter plate good to have. The Ortofon it has factory installed is a nice precursor to the OM lineup. Nice job. I like the 606. Nothing junk and much better than the overrated CS 5000 and Golden One. A real Dual.

very nice score

1) You scored big
2) I warned you about the cheesy case....(see my pic below)
3) dont play any GOOD vinyl till you have setup a new cart and aligned everything...did you balance the tonearm or just FIRE Away ? LOL

I dont see the 1/2 adapter - I also added a picture below of the one I have for you with a cart in in....Mission Cart with 773MM stylus

Is it me, or is the stylus bent downwards on the third picture?
I do believe you need a new stylus.

Nice TT BTW.

John

There's a better stylus available for that cartridge, the DN165e. LPGear evidently doesn't have it, but others do for about $20 more than the 150e.

Thanks Rob, yeah I didn't do any balancing or adjusting I just fired away, lol. I think the stylus is very bent on mine, but that adaptor looks nice, will send the paypal to you in the next couple of days. I'm gonna go to Goodwill today and pick up some cheap test vinyl I think.

The base on your turntable looks good:thmbsp:
