Duran Duran on AR 3a's

I'm sure this group may not be the first thing to come to mind in association with AR 3a's - but - they sound pretty darn good.

My wife is in the listening room so decided to queue something up that wouldn't elicit a "is that all there is to play" reaction. And Duran Duran one of her favs.

Ellectric Barberella, All She Wants Is, and Come Undun. The natural response and great bass of the AR's do wonders for this music. Like beeming back to the Visage club in the '80's :smoke:

'Tis indeed sweet to fire up the tunes and everything is "right". I'm still trying out various brands/types of speakers, but it seems to happen most often when my AR2a's are online. I'm rehabbing a pair of 5s, and continue to hope for a chance to try some 3a's.

You mentioned not really being a Duran Duran fan, yet enjoying this episode with them. Since I've put together a system that actually sounds good, not just loud, I appreciate more & more artists and genres other than late 60's-early 70's heavy rock & roll that has always been my primary interest.

I'm beginning to think that the more vocal/acoustic styles of music require a higher quality of sound reproduction to sound "good".

Don't get me wrong, I still dig a dose of ZZ Top at volumes that may elicit visits from the police. I much more often these days however spin up something like Keb 'Mo at low volume and revel in how much depth, richness & complexity can come from one man and a guitar, when before it wasn't long before I was thinking; "Is that all he's got?".

i am liking either pair of these... something about that ar sound, later this afternoon i will be trying the 11's with my fussy turntable... should be interesting and i will be a-b'ing with my paradigm studio 60's

Back in the 80's I was playing in a blues/classic rock band (though we just called it rock then) and I was a closet Duran Duran fan. I think it was when Notorious came out that I was finally able to make a case for their musicianship to my fellow musicians.

The early stuff is a lot of fun to listen to as there's a LOT of sequenced little things flying around over the thumping bass. I always thought it a shame that production and soundstaging on that type of music never really seemed to progress much.

It's not that I don't like Duran Durand. I do like the songs I listed above and more.

My wife and I saw them in concert - can't remeber if it was still 2008 or 2007 - on Broadway. It was an amzing concert. Small Broadway theater. They were playing for a week or more and the series got delayed due to broadway strike.

We saw themt he first night. They did an really neat "Kraftwerk" type session in the middle. Even did a version of Show Room Dummies by Kraftwerk.

What was really awesome were all the hot "80's babes" who were soaking it up. :D:yes::thmbsp:

In popularity there were close to being the "Beatles" of the '80's. Not saying they were or are musically comparible. But really they aren't bad and probably deserve more credit than they receive for the musicianship. They were ON the night I saw them. And they had the joint rockin' for sure.

I'd say my favorites are Electirc Barberella and Come Undun.

Thanks for noticing poorman !!!

Just put on my all time fav - Abbey Road. Never better than through the 3a's. Oh Darling really rocks. :tresbon:

Very talented songwriters, great arrangments and vocal harmony....suspect engineering, mixdown and mastering.

early to mid 80's stuff anyways IMO.

cheers

I'll bet the side two medley rocks on the ARs. Paul's fuzzy bass must sound perfect.

Still can't here the crickets on beginning of Sun King but at least I can still here them with headphones :D

Side 2 medley cranks. Didn't know till recently that the guitar battle was all 3 - George, John, and Paul thrashing away. Can't remember title of that section of the medley.

I know most folks will say Sgt Pepper was their pinnacle. I still think it's Abbey Road.

Another story I read was that John really wanted to sing on Pauls Oh Darling. Paul was adamant it was his and he was singing it. John got so upset it was a big part of the final breakup. 'Course the massive quantities of LSD, heroin, stress and Yoko had nothing to do with it :scratch2:

From 86-01 Warren Cuccurullo was their guitarist. He started out with playing with Frank Zappa. His name is used in the song "Catholic Girls" as an example of a Catholic boy's name. I may have to keep an eye out for an album of their's.........
