Free DVD BACK UP + FILE CONVERTER TOOL KIT

In order of preference

DVD shrink 3.2 (free open source ) is a very good one step solution I usually archive in DVD9 (uncompressed ) sometimes DVD 5 (compressed ) you can do .iso if you like. have done that also. If it reads the file it's one of best has decent options also it so far has read almost everything http://www.dvdshrink.org/

DVD fab 9 (trial version) has excellent decrypter that never expires ****
Will read some DVD/BD that DVD Shrink can not read .
Lots of features and benefits all avail for short time on free trial good to keep after that for the decrypter that feature does not expire
http://www.dvdfab.com/?set=lang
would probably purchase paid version if I did not have open source tools.

DVD Decrypter (free) self explanatory very good for works on some modern & older HDCP . decrypts only must use with Handbrake or other file converter/burner .
http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/

HandBrake (free) old school file converter one of the best slow but lots of options for quality .The Mac daddy of file converters Think of it as
LAME encoder but for DVD/BD
http://handbrake.fr/

Image burn ( free ) explanatory think of it as exact copy for media and data
"ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!" http://www.imgburn.com/

DVD Smith ( Free) Only used it once minimalist user interface
"DVDSmith - Ultimate Solutions for backing up your DVD & Blu-ray investment on Windows and Mac"
http://www.dvdsmith.com/

I've tried a lot of free trials and read some web postings so far at least for me these seem to work well . others have recommended these as well
this is a pretty good Free toolkit and will get the job done.

***** Most other free trials are hobbled won't read all the chapters unless you buy paid versions and ofc ALSO expire .

AK Members please feel free to add your choices (paid or free)
ofc your comments and additions are welcome and in fact encouraged

A bit off-topic, but when I put movies on my tablet, I use Decrypter and then Handbrake. It almost always works well.

I have a version of DVD Shrink on my computer, but I'm not sure if I've ever used it.

No you are right on topic !

I've done the same thing ,DVD Decrypter and Handbrake are slow but but they the job done, that is until you get a DVD that decrypter cannot read through the HDCP ( High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection ) . HB has a lot of options also it's the big daddy of file output formats and tweaks it's a must have.

Next up is DVD shrink, might work it usually does that's my favorite when it can read the disk its a one step deal.

The closer is dvdfab 9 when DVD shrink can not read the disk .
I haven't seen a disk it could not read ....Yet!
so far it can read the 2013 releases I have given it.

Oh, OK.
The Decryptor/Handbrake combo has been pretty good for me. It had a few glitches with less than perfect DVDs, but I was also having issues with the DVD drive in my computer, so it was most likely that.
I also had a problem with Monsters Inc. It used the french track instead of english. It's a goofy DVD, though. On my last component DVD player it would often load differently. Different menus, sometimes it would just start, sometimes it would default to french, sometimes not.
