Hey. I finally have a question. I have been using Audiokarma as a resource for the last couple of years. There is a wealth of information! I am new to the tube world. I was given this modded Dyna Pas. It sounds wonderful. Does anybody have any insight to what model i have and modds which have been done?

That is most likely a PAS3 modified to a PAS3x

It looks like a lot of mods
Stepped volume control
New boards with new caps and resistors
Selenum rectifer upgrade
Probably tone controls eliminated

It looks not-original

Thanks for your response. What i find interesting is only three tubes. I have looked at numerous images but all have four plus. It does sound sweet! I am using a solid state amp and Klipsch Quartets.

Sorry , this is not a dynaco PAS3. It's a homebuilt kit built from various sources.

Still, if it sounds good all is well. Dynakit and others sell custom face plates for that chassis. Some minus the holes for the disconnected tone controles, etc.

Thank you all for your replies. I will do some more reading about the mods. I do enjoy the sound but thats compared to my solid state components. Tube is really new to me. I purchased a Jolida sj502a last fall and the guy gave this to me with the purchase. I only payed $300. For both. The Jolida is stock as far as i know. It has chinese kt88's but sounds pretty good. I need to replace the bias trim pots. I have a line on a Dynaco ST-35 here locally. I was going to pair that with the pas. I am really making my tube comparison to a Marantz 2275. Different but in a good way.

Beyond this, it would be nice to have test reports for the different Dynaco "mods" out there, from a disinterested party. The original Dynaco circuits were well vetted.

Thats actually a lot of my problem with them. No data, just a lot of very subjective opinions on the results. I realize you can't always measure and quantify everything but it would be nice to prove its not worse at least.

And i have never heard a stock Dyna Pas. Any thoughts on Jolida products? I listened to my Jolida amp for a bit but I cannot set the bias correctly on two tubes. Trim pots max out at 20ma. I have read they had weak trim pots when new. I have not had the time to check the resistors. Any recomendations for tube gear to a newby? Working with a so so budget. Or should i put money into the Jolida.

Any thoughts on Dynaco st-70 or st-35? I may have a choice to make here soon. Both have been offered to me for purchase. Both stock and working.

What Peter said. Also, how sensitive are your speakers? What are their impedance curves? What type of music do you listen to? How large is your listening room? For example, a Klipsch Cornwall will rock a large room with either the st70 or st35. But a Magnapan will need at least the st70, preferably 2 of them for bi-amping.

Hello. Been away on vacation. I am listening to either Klipsch kg4's with crites upgrades, Quartets or Magnepan Mg1improved, smga's or mg2b. I was just approached by a fellow who would sell me a ST-70, fm tuner and Dyna Pas 3. They came from a family of a person who passed away. The gentleman bought/ assembled them new. Had them his whole life. They are mint and completely original. And they work fine. He wants $700.00 canadian. What do you all think. Still waiting to audition the all original st-35. It also works. That will run me 4-5 hundred.

I listen to all sorts of music. Mainly heavy. SOAD, tool, alice in chains, etc. But i will pop in others like Diana Krall from time to time. Room is about 12x22. I also have a setup in my garage which is 22x26 with a 10' ceiling.
