Dynaco A25 - Newbie Question on Recap

Good Morning,

I have searched, but could not find a thread on the physical aspect of doing a recap on a pair of A25's.

Should I remove the crossover (stapled to the cabinet) and work outside of the enclosure or try to articulate within the cabinet? I would need a third hand it looks like in there.

If removing, anyone have any recommendation so that the backing board stays intact?

Thanks!

I'd remove it if it is only staples holding it. Just staple it back when you're finished. If there's glue holding it, and it could be damaged by removal, I'd try to work on it without removal. Please let us know if the recap makes a difference. I just got a pair of A-25's myself and plan to recap as well.

It's a single 5uf cap inside the cabinet of each speaker. I did mine while they were in the cabinet and it will be the easiest recap you'll ever do short of no caps being in a cabinet. I think I spent half an hour rewiring them with spare 12ga speaker wire and changing the caps out. Don't make it any more complicated than it's not.

Did you, by chance, do an A/B comparison with the old wire vs the new?

For all who are interested I have tried Daytons and Jantzen Superiors and found the Jantzens to be, well, superior. A lot more interesting to listen to. Yeah, they are more expensive but you'll get a lot more listening pleasure for the money.

No. I didn't really care about any sonic differences that I probably wouldn't hear anyway as I'm not a big "critical listener". Plus, the A-25's aren't the main speakers in either of my 2 main setups but when they do make it into a setup, they are enjoyable to listen to. I just used these Dayton 5% poly caps and they were night and day better than the stock electrolytic. I didn't touch the resistors for the L-pad as I leave them in the Normal position. Maybe one day...

Thank you for all the replies. I did the recap with the cross over in the cabinet.

I had direction and assistance today and that helped a great deal.

I used Kimber's for the recap and it made a definite improvement top to bottom.

Only a few hours with it, so I will know more in a week or so.
