Eico hf-81 & hft-92

I recently picked up an EICO HF-81 along with an HFT-92. I am going through them and I would like to find a manual for the HF-81...I found a schematic for it online. I already found the manual for the HFT-92 online.

To date: the AM works fine on the 92, will find out more about the FM as I continue to troubleshoot. The 81 is working fine, to the extent that I have been able to test all of its functions. Actually, I was blown away by its performance and sound! A manual for it would be very helpful as far as testing, operation and adjustments.

Any idea where I can find an HF-81 manual…online or here? Any comments on the HF-81 performance?

The HF-81 has a well deserved reputation for excellent sound. Check out the Eico group on Yahoo. They will have a copy of the manual.

Although it is considered heretical by some... let me encourage you to at least consider replacing the 0.022 uF ceramic coupling caps with good quality modern coupling caps -- they need not be boutique capacitors! While there are those that claim that the essence of the HF-81's magic's in the coupling caps, that's not the way I see (nor hear) it. Ceramics are notoriously nonlinear. I put inexpensive Orange Drops in mine; and was thrilled with the improvement. They are darn fine sounding little amplifiers.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have everything working. Now to finish up the HFT-92 alignment...the station tuner is off calibration to the dial glass.

This is my first experience with EICO - both the HF-81 and HFT-92. That tuning eye dial pointer on the HFT-92 is cool. The HF-81 has all EICO tubes in it and the HFT-92 has all but one EICO.

BTW, did I mention that I am very impressed with the HF-81 sound?

1) The EICO branded tubes in that HF-81 are good tubes...
2) Appropos of nothing, a photo of the DM80 "excamation point" magic eye tube on an HFT-90...

OK, thanks to the manual, I figured out my final issue - the "alignment" problem with the HFT-92. The dial cord was strung backwards!

It looks like it has been this way since it was originally built. The middle freqs were correct and the highs and lows were reversed.

I am thoroughly enjoying this set up.

I have added an EICO MX99 to this set-up and the multiplexed stereo output
sounds fantastic! I am now a true EICO HF-81 convert. :music:

Once restored, you'll love the HF-81.

The only thing I left in there are the ceramic caps (call me heretic!!!).

Listening right now to Espace Musique (Radio-Canada cultural station) and I'm in heaven.
