What is the general consensus regarding the Elite amps and integrateds of the 80's and early 90's compared to some of the offerings in the 70's? (SX-1250 etc...)
Did Pioneer cost cut with Elite stuff in comparison or did they generally throw more money at the Elite projects?
Are there people that have both say vintage Pioneer integrateds from the 70's and Elite stuff from the 80's that can weigh in on this question.

Hi there,

I own some 70's stuff as well a a Elite set..

I have the 5590/PL-570x/HPM-150 setup and the SA-9900/CT-F1000/TX-9800/PL-71/HPM-100 setup from the 70's, and a M-90/C-90/PD-91/DSS-9 setup from the eighties.

My conclusion is that all this stuff sounds very, very sweet. I prefer the elite set a bit more; the sound is a bit more detailed and sharp. It gives more contrast namely in the mid and high tones, but this also has to do alot with the speakers alone ofcourse.. I have to say that my 5590(black SX-1250) sound great on most decent to good speakers, I listened to it once connected to some electrostats in combination with some converted tube cd-player, and boy did she sounded great!!. The tuner section of this receiver is also very good, great signal pick up, and once revised very good soud as well..

You should consider the fact that most of the stuff from the 70's will need a good renovation before functioning up to spec again, or at least, this is my expierence. Most of the stuff will work fine also without doing this, but still there will be big difference in sound quality once the units, are cleaned, adjusted, and had (at least) some cap replacement.. The Elite sets I own is functioning great, I did had to replace some relais in the preamp, but this was not to much of a job... Ofcourse, here one can also consider a cap replacement, since it is already 20 years old, some caps might be dried out..

To conclude; eventually you won't go wrong with either, considering you will own some great pieces of audio either way.. It depends also on which looks you like more I think... I like both:D...

Have fun with the search!!

Best regards,
Willem

Pretty much apples and oranges here. You're comparing seperates to receivers and integrated amps. An apples to apples comparison would be the SPEC gear from the 70's versus the M-90/M-91/C90/C91, and if that's the case, as I've already mentioned here many times before, I'll go with the 70's SPEC equipment. Oh, and I have owned lots of the Elite equipment, M-90/M-91/C90/C91, to name a few, but it has all been sold now, except a PD-65 CDP. Once again, just my $.02

I do absolutely agree it is comparing apples with oranges; but that is not the point; it is the same as with those fruits; the importance lies in which of them you like more..

What I do like about the elite setup is having a remote:D sometimes it is really nice to be able to switch from one source to the other without walking up to your system..

Thanks for the input guys. The only Elite pc of gear that I've owned was the SP-99d (dolby digital processor) Now I know that you can't base any opinions on this particular unit (it did sound good but hardly the quality of a good preamp) What I did notice is the build quality of the unit. It was fantastic. Shielding galore on the inside. Very nicely put together. I was thinking that if the quality went into this unit then I'm sure the same went into all of the two channel gear as well that was Elite. Plus the looks and the finish are killer  So.... which lead me to ask this question and what were some thoughts regarding the Elite stuff. I'm interested in picking up some two channel Elite gear to try out so I'm now on the hunt. I certainly wouldn't turn down SPEC gear if I came across it that's for sure. :smoke:

Willem-

the older stuff that you have, has it been recapped and otherwise brought back up to spec? Just wondering...

Ian,
Yes, both the 5590 and the 9900 had a recap and adjustment. Tuner of the 5590 is also fully recapped and adjusted..

A friend owns an M90 with a SAE Pre Amp, Ive dragged my speakers over a few times, And it was Rock n Roll heaven!

Pioneer c90a/m90a Elite vs pioneer sx 1250

Pioneer Elite c90a/m90a price 2750 USD. Its approx 6900 USD in today money
Pioneer sx 1250 price was 950 USD. 4300 USD in today money.

Pioneer sx 1250. Power supply for amp and preamp built on single transformer.
Pioneer Elite : 2 transformers in power amp, 3 transformers in preamp which was unusuall even in the 80s.

So build quality of c90a/m90a Elite Components is far better and more hi end than sx 1250 build quality which is deeply compromise, as in all receivers.

Pioneer Elite c90a /m90a has high grade components. Nichicon Muse for audio, non standard brass cap resistors, ucon polypropylene capacitors (used in High end Gear like 9000 USD denon da s1 dac, luxman mq 360 tube AMP and in accuphase). So there was no cost cutting when compared to pioneer receiver

Cost cutting is clear visible in Pioneer sx 1250. Not only build quality is not up to par but also sx 1250 was much cheaper than Elite.
