I've inquired before about putting the EMITS from a Qb into the rear position for RSII's. That was not recommended. Thanks for the input. Here's another one....

RS 4.5 EMITS (part # 902-0143) in place of rear EMITS for said RSII's (part # 902-5086)?

And if the consensus is that no other EMIT should go in except the exact part # for the RSII rear tweets I will commence to shuttin the hell up about it. Thanks again.

Different EMITs had different-sized magnet structures, which will effect the tweeter's output. If the PN's don't match, you can't be certain they will have the same output as the specific model for your speakers. Also, there are size issues; some EMITS are very thin (such as on the RS-IIb), while others are as much as twice as thick due to the bigger magnets. So mixing PN's is not generally a good idea.

However, most EMITs used the same tweeter diaphragm. So, if the magnets in your EMITs are good (i.e. not cracked or broken), you can thief a good diaphragm from another EMIT that may have come from a different speaker and you'll be good to go. I've done it, and it works just fine. A word of caution, if you have not already done so, before disassembling an EMIT (or EMIM), read and then re-read the sticky thread at the top of the Infinity forum on how to take these apart. Don't take one apart without using a homemade jig to keep things lined up and from snapping out of alignment (which can result in pinched fingers, punctured diaphragms, broken magnets, and lots of cussing).

No, EMIMs from that era are interchangeable. The only differences between RS-4.5 and RS-IIb EMIMs is the design of the terminals. Even the mighty IRS-V and IRS-Beta's use this same EMIM. They all share the same part number and the same diaphragm assembly.

Of course, the Hi-energy EMIMs from the Renaissance speakers and later IRS models won't work.

Besides terminals being different, the diaphragm of 1982 and later vintage EMIMs like those of the RSIIb is very slightly different from the 4.5 and 2.5.

Maybe just cosmetic differences?? They all have the same P/N: 751-3806.

I believe they have the same part number because if you ordered a replacement for an RS4.5 EMIM in later years you were shipped the current revision of EMIM in production and not what was original to your speaker.

One difference I am certain of is that a later diaphragm appears to have two pieces of clear scotch tape running down the center. This is why the face of an RS1b diaphragm has a dull appearance in the middle and is comparatively shiny on the outsides, while an RS4.5 diaphragm is uniformly shiny. There is also a difference in the dampening of the diaphragm and/or the material at the rear face of the diaphragm -- I don't recall.
