All lettering. Though not sure about "Marantz".

You can tell by looking and feeling. The letters are machined into the metal.

Your pics do not look like engraved words.

Better pics available?

Rob

Your right,at looking closer its just the grain on the faceplate i was feeling,
so no engraved marantz here.

If you have a true engraved one, it's fairly obvious. The lettering is actually recessed into the surface of the metal, to a depth that is easy to feel and see, in real life. I haven't measured it, but it's probably 0.5 mm deep (or more?). If you have one in front of you and you aren't sure, then it probably is not engraved.

Where it gets difficult to tell sometimes, is in online pictures. The lighting, picture resolution and screen resolution can all make it difficult to tell.

The champagne gold color gets a little tricky, as sometimes a thick layer of nicotine stain can make silver look "golden"! If cleaning solvents remove the gold, then the color was nicotine stain, not gold-anodized aluminum. When you've seen a few examples of each, you get pretty good at distinguishing them, but again, it might be hard to be sure from online pics, esp. since color management isn't perfect through digital systems.

I just took a look at mine and "all" of the lettering is engraved. I was surprised that even the tiniest "in" and "out" lettering by the dubbing jacks is engraved.

Sometimes the champange color is not so noticable. I had to have it pointed out to me. But you can feel the engraved lettering for sure. Also check the production number. Engravings were only done for the first 5000

You mean for the first 5000 each year the 2270 was made. And the 2270 was made from 1971 to 1974.

Yes, even the large 'Marantz' is engraved.

Not sure about the first 5000 only, though.

My 2270 serial # is 22336 and mines engraved. Though I have not checked to see if it's 100% unmolested. As in, I've never even taken it out of it's wood case in the 4-5 years I've owned it.

This could be a good fact finding thread for anyone doing a search now or in the future.

I have read, many times, that it was only the first 1000. They started with the number 1000 so that would mean up to ser # 2000, which 2 of mine are if fact in the 1000's BUT a few months ago a tech friend said he had one he just went thru and the original owner wanted to sell it. He called me, told me it was the gold engraved version, ser # above 2500. ??????? I went to see it, it's the real deal, bought it.

So the first 1000 made is a myth. If anyone now or in the future has a later ser #, please let us know.

I enjoy a good mystery and the "why did Marantz engrave some of these?" is a good one.

The best I've come up with so far is from a friend who knew Saul, Sid and Richard. He "kinda" remembers it as something to do with Marantz's 20th anniversary. The 2270 came out around 1971-72 and Marantz started business around 1952 so the math would be correct yet they don't say "limited edition" or "anniversary anything" on them. A possibility could be that you could order your "new" 2270 with a gold engraved face for an upcharge during this time.

Love to find out more.

Wondering if yours has red and black speaker terminals or all black?
Yours has 5 digits in the ser# ?

The first 5000 was a fact I picked up somewhere on this forum. My serial number starts with a 4 something. The faceplace feels great...

And it has the all black speaker terminals.

Red and black speaker terminals. Correction on serial # 22316.

Yes 5 digit serial number. Though I've only had mine 4-5 years so I can not account if something was changed on the previous 30. Like the terminals or faceplate.

My serial # is 36755 with red & black terminals . The chassis is stamped 1974
i think ,does anyone know the breakdown of the serial numbers? And just how many units were built of certain models each year? my 2270 reciever could be a 1973 model?

It could be a Canadian version. I've seen that with a 2230 recently and that was the case. The ones in the US stopped at around serial number 5000. There's even some oddballs out there where they stopped stamping the letters but still had the champagne face (those were the last ones before changing to silver).

Its a model that was exclusively produced for the Canadian market. We didn't get any of the 5000 that were earmarked for the U.S. and threaten to declare war on Iceland if this wrong wasn't immediately corrected . ( Iceland was the only country we could bully back in the 70's . Sadly , their military capabilities have surpassed ours now :D )

We got some Engraved stuff here in DK aswell. They are 4-digit all of them as long as we talk about the receivers 2215-2230-2245-2270 - and they are equipped with the black speakerterminals.
I got an engraved/champagne 2230 recently - #1037 = the 37'th ever made. But it needs quite some attention.
Several models from Marantz had engraved "members" - E.g. 120 -1060 - 20 - 19 - 7T-7C - 10B - 2215-2230-2245-2270

My 2265B has a SN of U060489 but i had to peel of the plastic from it to read it :(
I wish my faceplate was champagne and engraved :( lol
