ESS HD-1020

Going to look at a pair for $15.00. Looking at the pictures, the woofers need to be refoamed. A two way system with a front port, and there's some three way's on the bay. Being that i've never replaced surrounds on speakers, i'm thinking this might be a good pair to get my feet wet. My question is, are these worth the time and or money? Any input would be appreciated. Will D.

Couldn't find any definitive info on these (just a couple of other posts asking for info). Do they have an AMT tweeter? If so they're probably worth the time.

It has what looks like a horn tweeter. The two pair on ebay now have the same looking tweeter only they are a 3 way speaker.

Those horns are probably Motorola piezoelectric tweeters. They sound decent, although no comparison to the AMT. Similar configurations were sold under the Cannon TLS brand.

For the price you probably can't go wrong. A good way to get your feet wet with surround replacement. I wouldn't spend a lot on the replacement surrounds, though.

Any pictures, Willy-D? I had a pair of the HD-1000s at one time. I wonder if they're any relation? For some stupid reason, I expected some AMT sound out of them, so I was disappointed. A guy bought them from me to get his kid into vintage and was happy as a clam with them.

They feel cheap, I dunno what I was thinking, their goin in a closet for now as I don't even wanna look at em. No grills, these are just goodwill Saturday night specials. Mr. Dumass.(that's french for Dumbass)

I'd always wanted to try a set. (I like horns) If I were you, I'd install new surrounds and give them a try. I'll follow along in the hopes that you let us know what you think of them. I'd guess that they are better than you think.

Alexander Dumass of Count of Monte Crisco fame? Snap us some pictures of those cheap closet jockeys. I was disappointed in mine in that they had the horn metallic sound without the horn muscle.

Yea, you make a good point, there's actually a couple pair on ebay that are three way's and some decent money being asked for them. I had a pair of Klipsch kg-4.2's I found at a goodwill store for $36.50 for the pair. I ended up selling them and regretted doing so. It took me awhile to get used to their horn tweeters, but after listening to them over a period of time I liked them. But i'd always been an ADS fanatic and I found a pair of L-780 2's and decided to let the Klipsch go. But come to find out one of the 780's had a bad tweeter so what did I do? I bought a completely refurbished pair of speakerlab 4's from a fellow AK'er. Anyway, these hd-1020's were just my curiosity getting the best of me. I'll take some pics and try and talk myself into replacing the surrounds. But thanks for your input, always appreciated from fellow Karmanites. Will D.

I can't find anything on the HD-1020 but there is a PS-1020 that looks really good.
Check the hd-1200's on ebay now. They are the 12 inch version and the horns look different as does the name tag. And check the pair of hd-1000's on there. The 1000's are exactly like the hd-1020's but the 1020's are two way. The horns on the 1200's are all black and shaped differently, and the horns on the 1000's and the 1020's have a silver frame (so to speak) around them. Will D.
