I got to experience riding in one in Berlin several years ago, at a former communist newspaper office building. They were mainly a Continental European thing but there are a few in the UK. They are more efficient than elevators IF, and that's a big IF, people can properly use them. They have fallen out of favor due to injuries and a couple of deaths.

But still... the intersection of an elevator and escalator. They are very cool and a blast to ride. I did the thing that the guy in the video did just to check it out.

Oh they were fun. We had one at Siemens where I learned the trade. Not sure if that still exists. I think they would be a death trap for a population having rising obesity :-)

They used to be common in powerhouses, chemical plants and parking garages. All the ones I used to use in powerhouses and chemical plants are long gone. I assume OSHA or the insurance companies didn’t approve and for good reason, they were quite dangerous for the klutzy or careless. And people often used them while carrying tools and equipment, a big no-no.

Reminds me, years a go when I ran into a Brit type in a big dept store who was in a hurry and asked me, "Where's the lift, mate?"

I sent him outside where a cab pick up area was. Something lost in the translation.

Q

They don't have them in the States. I'd like to try one some time I'm in .eu, but not many public ones are left :/
