Everything but FF

Everything works except for Fast Forward.
It seems like the issue is this rubber belt covered roller. The tan colored one with the tire and rim’s right in the middle of the assy. It looks like it’s moving towards the drive roller but just not gripping enough. The same roller is used for Rewind and works fine in that position.
Does anyone know this transport and can confirm that a new tire is what’s needed ?

I don't know this particular mechanism, but a roller or gear to bridge across the clutch to make it run FF/REW is how most of the ones I have fooled with do it. Sometimes there is an intermediate wheel on one side to reverse direction if its not an auto-reverse deck that spins both sides anyway.

If the same roller is used for both and it works in rewind, my guess is you've got some gummy lube issue thats preventing it from moving over far enough to engage. If there is an intermediate roller in the mix, the problem might actually be with that one.

..but it works fine in 'play' mode right? Should be the same roller as FF (I would assume). Can you see the clutch wheel fully engage when in play?

Play mode does work fine, although it stopped on one tape yesterday, so maybe clutch friction is low. The idler does shuttle and is used for both ff rew, but rew uses a third non rubber wheel with this one wedged in between to reverse direction. I really need to take the mechanism apart to see what the problem is but it’s a long way down the rabbit hole to get to that area and I’m a bit worried about breaking something or just plain getting it reassembled correctly on the way back out.

Well you know the drill: take pictures at every step, take your time, and never force anything.

Gadget73 mentioned gone bad lubricants, I'd look for that first. A missing spring maybe? An exploded model would help to find out.

That’s looking likely. My wife just complained about the chirping bird noise it was making!
Sounds like a friction clutch squeaking when slipping- near the last quarter of the tape.

Might be the capstan squeaking in a dry shaft. Either way: cleaning and lubing the whole thing seems unavoidable. Remember: this is your hobby, you enjoy this!;)

ahhh yes i remember those days, i had to fool my self into believing i enjoyed fixing my vintage gear and could fearlessly disassemble the most complex units still smiling,
hold on!! in front of me now on the coffee table is a sony cdp-xa50es in bits getting a repair ,along side the table waiting in line is a teac a-3300sx thats found its way into the service area hahahahah,
it would seem i like doing it but i dont really as every job is a nerve racking ordeal, but since i started learning the basics and got better at it over the last 20 odd years i have learnt to love the out come more then the job,
so with this said ,one must get good at the fixing part to love the out come part,

keep the good work up it will become second nature soon enough
good luck friend
