Extend original Thorens RCA cable

Hi,

I just bought a Thorens TD-160 MKII, but the original RCA cable (grey in picture) is very short and has been soldered to a standard RCA cable (black). I want replace the latter as it's not working well.
I think I need to:
- get a coax cable (not sure what type?)
- solderer that to the original grey cable (right?)
- then solderer new RCA connectors to the new cable

Can you advise me on which type coax cable with which RCA connectors?

Isn't there a way to solder one RCA cable pair to the point where the tonearm wires go to the terminal board?

In my opinion, any good quality RCA cable will be fine. Monoprice make a lot of lengths of cable for your needs. Maybe get a 6 foot long interconnect and cut one pair's end off to solder to that terminal board?

Thanks, yes that might be an option but it's a lot less accessible, so if I can avoid having to work on that part and just solderer directly to the grey that would be a lot easier in terms of access.

Well, this is what I might do. See if you can solder those gray wires to a pair of female RCA ends. Maybe rig it to that wooden part of the plinth, in the back of your photo. Then, get whatever length male-to-male RCA cable you need to attach the table to your pre-amp or receiver?

Like this? The third connection on the left is a separate grounding post. Not sure if your table has this?

Oh yes that is actually an excellent idea, thanks!
There is no grounding, but want to look into adding that yes. but that's the next step :)
Thanks again, will order parts for this.

BTW, the foam inserts on the springs are rotted. Replace those, while you're in there. If it were me, I'd cut the pieces myself, before spending time/money finding the "right" parts — it's just foam, Thorens didn't use a special High-End formula.

Try to get low capacitance cable, makes all the difference with MM cartridges. Shorter also better. You can only add to the capacitance of your tonearm cable with your phono stage, so you can always go higher if needed but not lower.

Hopefully, he puts in female RCA terminals onto his turntable. Then, he can experiment with a variety of aftermarket interconnects.

For what it is worth, after experimenting with various new and old RCA cables, I found my old 1990s Audioquest Topaz to be the best for my system. I'm using MC cartridges and a tube phono pre-amp. :)
