Extremely light pressure fixes Extremely annoying problem... (help?)

Well that was pretty rough. I didn't poke a hole in the speaker cone but I did make a bit of a mess. I'll have to glue back some bits when I put the dust cover back on.

However, the important stuff: it looks great in there! Grease is still visible and greasy; the outside glue ring (orange) is hard as a rock, and when I played some music the rattle had gone away (probably something related to the dust cover? something else?)

I feel like I don't want to do anything more as I'm an idiot and likely to ruin things. What do you think?IMG_3302.jpg IMG_3301.jpg
 
Just Re-foam again...... it's worth the $25
Now that you have the dust cap off shimming the voicoil gap is easy and re-foam
( again )

It appears from your picture that the voicecoil Gap is showing the aluminum former to be rubbing at about the 2 to 4 O'Clock position of your voicecoil in the second picture

If they were my speakers I'd do a
Fresh Re-foam properly shimming the voicoil , then you will have a like New set of Ohm C2'S to Enjoy for ever. .

The original Woofers are irreplaceable and worth every penny to restore. ...

I'm pretty sure the voice coil is not rubbing. It is extremely narrow (the distance between voicecoil and the surrounding metal) however; can I just run a bit of a narrow metal or plastic around it to make sure it clears?

Is it possible that it might clear at the current position (upright) but there might be enough "vertical drag" that when it's horizontal it ends up rubbing just a bit?

I played a 10HZ tone on it, and it resonated strongly moving up and down a few inches about 2-3 times a second, and since it was below my hearing threshold I could hear (rather, not hear) that there was no significant rubbing or scraping. I went up the tone ranges and couldn't find the buzz. I'm not sure if it is the voice coil or something else that wasn't glued down. Still investigating.

BTW yeah the back of my speaker just has a single adjustment. So there will only be 2 capacitors inside?

Also John Strohbeen the Owner of Ohm Acoustics actually Recommends Rotation of some of their Woofers because of this problem..
Magnets should also be reenforced with Epoxy to prevent shifting from 40 year's of gravity with the ohm magnets..

I was already thinking about rotating them, yes... But you are right, I should just bite the bullet and refoam it. Occam says the easy answer is often the issue (well, not in so few words!) but yeah. I'll use some shims and refoam it after watching some youtube tutorials about it. I'll check that the magnet it tight but I expect it's totally fine. But I'll check.

There, now it's clean. I'll cut off the old refoam and clean it up, and put on a new one. I like the method of aligning the voice coil using low frequency signals better than shimming; I'll try that this time. It's definitely rubbing. Duh.

OK, that was quite a pain. I got the new foam surround put in there, and I aligned the cone using low frequency signals... no problem, no rubbing.

I'll install it horizontally after it is done drying out from the glue and make sure it's not rubbing; I'll try to rotate it a bit if there is some rub. Whew.

Any suggestions for what to put on the cabinet wood? I'm an idiot and just have been using wood cleaner/polish. I'm sure there is something much, much better.

Whew, done. Got the dustcap on. I decided to replace the 2 caps and a resister in the other speaker as well, so I feel I did my good deed for the day/year/decade.

I hooked 'em up to my Yamaha CR-2040 and as expected they sound great. Much better than the beaters I had been using.

For me, given my schedule, that was epic. And it all worked out in the end. Amazing.
 
Ugh, sorry I need more help.

I'm using the CR-2040 to drive the Ohm C2's and also a pair of Klipsch KG 3.5's. Surely the Yamaha has enough power, yes, but the trouble is that the Ohms, as mentioned above, are POWER HUNGRY as in POWER HOOONGY.

The master volume pushing the same signal to the Ohms and Klipsch's results in quiet Ohms and moderately loud Klipschs. Plus the Ohms are farther away.

Is there some clever way I can just inhibit the signal going to the Klipsch's with a resistor or something to make it less loud? Do I need to buy some stand-alone volume controller for one pair of the speakers? Is there a clever way to get this effect out of my amplifier? Like is the rec out amplified more than the normal signal and I could put one pair of speakers on that, and the other on the normal output? Yes, I'm stupid. I know.
 
I have 3 systems in my house and all three have 4 speakers and two amps/receivers. That is the best way to deal with the issue you have. I believe Niles makes a speaker switch with separate volume controls. This would probably work for you. Niles is not the only company that makes these things; so take a good look around. If you have an extra amp/receiver go the double amp route. All you need is an RCA splitter. Nice job on the woofers and cabinet. Have fun.
