Failed console run

Found a console on Craigslist a month ago. The guy said it was a pilot console with a Garrard TT and a tube amp and the name was Pilot and that he'd bought it new in 1966. That year is in the console nether region where some are tube, many are solid state and some are hybrid. But being a good scavanger, I kept in contact.

At the time said the stairs had just been removed for a construction project and the console was six feet long and heavy as a bugger and moving it would have to wait until the stairs were rebuilt.

It was free.

So far so good.
Got the call, recruited a friend and went today.
Solid State. Garrard 80.
We took it but it's destined to have the hinges, speakers, turntable and receiver removed before going into the dumpster. No room. That thing would have stored a lot of records though.

Moral of story?
Some people will say it's tube just to get it out of the house.:nono:

Hey, by the way, I hate the dumpster, and you should too. It's a shame to throw something reusable into the landfill to be lost forever. I don't know what condition this thing is in, but you have a Freecycle group there. Consider posting the empty console there or on the free section of CL, and see if someone wants to adapt it as a cabinet or something.

Cabinets can sometimes have high-quality wood for building something. They also make great fire wood!

I can't begin to remember the number of people who have told me their radio/TV/Stereo/record player/whatever had tubes in it, only to arrive and find a solid state unit. OTOH, I've gotten a few things from people that said their unit used transistors, only to find tubes. That's always a good surprise. I've also had people try to pass ten year old boom boxes off as "antique".

I really don't think most of these people intend to mislead anyone. They simply don't know any better. Most people only know that "it works or it don't". That's the reason I finally had to start asking very specific questions that would help determine what I was dealing with. Many times, if these questions could not be answered; I'd thank the owner for their time and move on.

I got a heavy receiver once off Freecycle. Guy said it had tubes in it, broke down a decade earlier and he put it in the closet when his technician said he needed a new receiver.

It was an SX-1250. After a visit to the Echowars spa, it's my flagship.

Ya just never know.
