Feel Like Crying...Just Missed Out On Major Craigslist Score

My ignorance of vintage audio gear cost me a major score last night/this morning. I have just recently gotten into vintage gear. Was checking craigs last night around 8:20 when I come across a listing titled "Pioneer Stereo Sets Negotiable". The listing was posted at 7:27 last night, so I called less than an hour from when it was listed. I click on it and it includes a turntable, receiver, cassette deck, and 8 track player. The listing included a phone # so I promptly called. Thing is I wasn't sure of the model #'s on the TT and receiver, and the listing didn't include them. And the guy didn't even know. I talked to the guy and asked if he would sell the TT and receiver only. He said he wanted to sell the complete set together. I asked him how much he wanted for the set. He said $200. I told him I'll call him back in a little while.

I did some quick research to try and come up with the models...and I quickly realized what these were. You can see from the pics...it was a PL-570 TT and an SX-5590. I called the guy back but didn't get an answer. When I hung up with him earlier he kind of rushed me off the phone like he had another incoming call. I guessing that call was from another buyer. But I couldn't get back up with him. I called the other # in the listing (there were 2 numbers listed) and talked to I guess was his wife. She said to call him in the morning. Called him this morning and couldn't get up with him again. Called his wife's phone again and got a hold of her...and she said that someone was all set to buy the system for $200 this morning.

:no::(:tears:

So close! This one will sting for a while.

Half expect a thread to pop up here reading "Major Craigslist Score Today!!"

Someone has a huge smile on their face this morning. While my smile is turned upside down. :tears:

Yeah, I wouldn't have quibbled.

If it's any consolation, depending on the seller, that ad could have quickly turned into an auction, screwing the first responder and selling for quite a bit more than $200. In my area, that's pretty much how Craigslist works.

I feel for you, I was told i was the first in line to buy a nice Mac amp, preamp, and KLH speakers for 300.00. When the day came for me to get the stuff the seller would not answer or return my calls. I imagine he sold it for more without letting me have first chance. I did all I could do, really pissed me off. You'll get another chance at something, it's all about karma man. :thmbsp:

+1, I've seen that so many times, I've given up on CL. I've read too many stories here also about deals going south.

It's best to just move along and forget the whole deal. It didn't happen. It wasn't meant to be. Keep looking and other things will come along. Then one day you'll have so much good gear you'll post about hoarding.

Doesn't sound like a very good deal to me. Certainly nothing to cry over. Look at it this way: now you have 200 instead of junk clogging up your basement!

The mighty dollar is the main thing for most but not all sellers. I made an agreement to buy a pair on JBL L7 Speakers for 400 dollars on a Sunday and agreed to pick them up on Wednesday because the seller said that was the best day for her so that was fine with me. Then I got an email from the seller on Tuesday letting me know they were just sold and picked up. Kinda of a crappy way to do things.

Yeah, I have a feeling that this is maybe what happened. Although he seemed completely oblivious to what he had when I talked to him, once he started getting a bunch of calls on it he probably checked into it more. A quick ebay search would have enlightened him pretty quickly. And the fact that I could never get him back on the phone...I knew that wasn't a good sign. He is probably in the midst of a bidding war now. But why wouldn't he invite me into it?! His wife said that someone was on the way over to pick up the gear for $200. Who knows.

Moving on...

I sure would have been bummed missing out on that 8-track.

Seriously, with CL you snooze, you lose. I have missed deals because I did not act immediately. If it looks like a good deal and you want it, drop what you are doing and go get it. When I sell, I start with the first serious responder. If they are not ready to come and get it or do not show up when promised, it goes to the next respondent. Craigslist sellers just want it gone and do not care who they sell it to.

Not that good of a deal. Only $1400+ in gear at the going eBay rates.

Myself, I only buy on Craigslist at 1/10 market value or less. I can't be bothered with low-margin trifling. :D

The turntable by itself is going for $400 to nearly $800. And this one seems in excellent condition.

Well great...now I want to cry again! :tears:

I agree the SX-5590 AKA black faced SX-1250 would likely sell for $1200.00 -2k by itself if working well then the PL-570 another $500.00 or more.

That's the PL-570...correct?

Edit: Never mind. See you edited your post.

The fellow did say the receiver was "emitting an odor from the back". May be a leaking cap? But he said it was working. He was the original owner. I'm sure many of the caps would need replacing, and probably some other work. But she appears in great cosmetic condition.

Everyone misses something at some point. Or if you are like me you will miss tons of stuff constantly.

The cosmetic condition is the single biggest factor in the value of these  any broken or worn out parts or leaky caps can be replaced easily. There rare as hell too, if there was a nice one pop up on Ebay I would not be surprised to see it 2k.

It's extremely difficult to acquire almost anything that is undervalued and underpriced - especially when advertised on the internet. The odds of being the winner are so remote that I don't bother playing the CL game anymore and just resolve to pay market or near market for anything I really desire to own.

Hats off for those that have the time, energy and wherewithal in order to successfully execute such transactions with any degree of consistency.

**Isn't this more of a D & S topic?

Been there...Live and Learn....I am sure this will not happen again.

It's only gear, lots more out there. I used to get pissy if I missed a great deal, now I couldn't care less.
