Finally bought some Mc gear

Always looking for new gear to try

So a buddy of mine wanted to trade me for some gear and he had this combo up. I grabbed a MC39 and MC7106 with manuals in perfect shape (might need a lamp bulb or 2) for a Sansui BA/CA 2000 and 5 bills. So I feel that I came out alright and have some nice stuff to try out.

I bought JBLnut's super JBL 250TI's in Brazilian Rosewood with the upgraded crossovers and I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival. I picked up the Mc gear so that I could try it out with the 250's and maybe use some of the 7106's features (Biamp?).

Is there anything I should do with either of the units before putting them in service? I know that I need to get some lights for the meters, a few are out but if I'm opening it up I'll do it all in one shot.

I have some other gear I could use, but these are just so pretty..

I should have them sometime next week and then I can take some pics.

Any help or input would be appreciated!

Both units *should* be fine. If these are early production units they are about 26 or 27 years old, so keep that in mind.

I would start by learning how to bridge this amp for 2ch only. Your going to want those 320 watts with the L250 so do some reading on the amp and the proper hookup.

POWER OUTPUT, SIX CHANNELS
100 watts per channel into 8 ohm loads,
or 160 watts per channel into 4 ohm loads
minimum sine wave continuous average
power output per channel, all channels
operating.
The output RMS voltage is:
28.3V across 8 ohms
25.2V across 4 ohms
POWER OUTPUT,

TWO CHANNELS BRIDGED
320 watts into an 8 ohm load
, minimum
sine wave continuous average power output.
The output RMS voltage is:
50.6V across 8 ohms

Thanks for any and all input here guys - I told Galaxie to post the question as all of the Mac knowledge possessed by the members here is staggering :-) I think twiiii has this amp and should have some good insight hopefully.

Hey guys thanks for the input, this model has the balanced XLR vs. the 6 port setup they had originally. I'm still trying to catch up with all the "fancy" aspects of the pre and amp. I've ordered the replacement bulbs for both and now I'm trying to see if I can track down the ribbon cable for the pair. I called up Mcintosh and they said there is a 24 and 27 pin if I recall (60/100.00) but I didn't know if there was another option for the cable? Do I need to spend the luxury tax for that ribbon cable or is there other variations or options over that? I mean if I have to pay I have to pay, also what does the Ribbon cable give me that I can't get if I don't use it?

I'm going to pour over the manuals and see if I can do it right and hook them up to jblnut's 250's and the rest of my system.

Before I put it all into play I'm going to have them both serviced so anything that needs to be addressed can be. Is there anything that I should have done or is everything for the post part pretty solid?

Thanks for any direction folks, it helps!

I don't know why you think you need any service prior to using them. Ok you need a couple lamp, do that but you should have this stuff hooked up before doing anything.

It was only going to be for a checkup if anything since they would be inside changing the bulbs. Everything is working and to my knowledge without an issue (My buddy has them and I trust him).

Just wanting to be proactive as I'm a new Mc owner and didn't know if there was anything to address while it was there.

The DB-25 cable isn’t necessary, just a convenient way to pass all channel signals via a single cable. Feel free to use RCA cables.

Thank you, I didn't know and figured I would ask. Anything else I should do before I toss this all together when It arrives? Until I get my L-250's I'll be using the Tannoy Arden's with this setup!

I've owned 3 of the Mc-7106 amps ,I've owned the C,-39 as well as JBL-L250s ,as stated above what service do you believe the units need aside from lighting replaced ? A tip that will save you $60 or more ,when having lighting repaired do not ask for the tech to clean your piece ,it will be an additional charge when the tech will clean out the gear while repairing lighting at no additional cost just from servicing the lights

The 1 drawback to the C-39 I had was only 1 input for 2 Channel amp in RCA & 1 in XLR ,so running multiple amps in 2 channel required XLR splitters ,i have 2 or 3 of the Mcintosh link cables floating around in my cable stash ,i found themtto be useless but i will look for them,if I find them I will send you 1, the Mc,-7106 is one of my favorite Amps and the lack of Autoformers should provide those JBLs with the right power as long as you bridge mono with 2 channels ,you could Biamp the JBLs running 2 bridged channels to woofers and 1 stereo channel to the tweeters ,some speakers sound better with Autoformers while others sound better without ,the JBLs sounded better for me with an Mc-300 ,another no Autoformer amp & my favorite small McIntosh amp of all time ,the 7106 is no slouch and the red meters helped break up the look of my rig from being a lab experiment with too many blue meters .

The RCA and XLR will each drive an amp at the same time in 2 channel with no damage to the C-39 but I preferred to use splitters with mine ,I'll check on the interlink cable this weekend for you .

Agreed ,I found the McIntosh interlink cable to be poorly made from the days McIntosh refused to build a premium cable ,I tossed mine from 7104 and multiple 7106 in the cable bin & used quality cables for all amps & sources .

Thanks for the reply back, I was honestly just wanting to get some bulbs replaced. I figured if I had it in the shop already I didn't know if there was anything I should do in the event that it would be needed. If I don't have to do anything I would be thrilled. I've had some gear in the past that needed some updates or "fixes" before being back in service. Being that I'm new to the Mc world I just wanted to do it right. But hey, if you guys think it will be fine and they don't need anything I'm thrilled to hear. My perfect dream is to have some new lamps installed and toss them in the mix to get things going.
