Finally, the amp I have been lusting after...

Grats! with the nice M700 ;)

....and poor performance 1973 electronics with "infinite" amount of TIM (audible even when 0.01%)
I should imagine that you could have gotten a job with Stereophile, since you can hear TIM, and seem to be the first that I know of to do so.

TIM is a marketing myth.

...back to your regularly scheduled program. :)

So now the question is, what shall I use for a preamp? I have 2 viable options as I see it:

1) Use the Preamp section from one of my KA-9100's.
2) Use the Preamp from my Toshiba mini system (its actually quite nice).

I suppose the other option is somehow rounding up the 700C to go with it, if I should be so lucky... What are your thoughts on this?

Your options.

Try everything.Heck,I'd even suggest using only one channel of each 9100 for an effective dual mono preamp!
However as an owner of a Kenwood 700C,I'd say buy a 700C. :thmbsp:

Plans

I intend to put this to its first test using the Preamp from a KA-9100, and the speakers will be my Infinity RS-6000. That should be a pretty sweet combo, I'll keep you all posted!

Didn't an AK'r rebuild one like this recently? I really like the looks of it Aaron, congrats! Tell us the details when you put it to the test.

<raise hand>

That would be me. I only got it going because of EW's handholding and a few parts out of his junkbox. Replaced every electrolytic on the driver boards, installed new outputs & drivers, new bias pots and bypassed the filter caps (which also had to be replaced). Lost track of how many times I've ripped mine apart.

Not to rain on your parade but in its current condition (ancient caps, drifting bias & offset), she's probably only performing at a fraction of her true capability. A bias and offset tweak would probably help greatly. Reread the first messages in the DC offset thread. If you like what you hear, that's great. Just don't act surprised if somebody tells you it sounds horrid.

Cosmetically yours looks OK. What's wrong with it? She obviously powers up since the meter backlights come up.

You might want to check the outputs. Mine were a dodgy mix of NTE subs and original semis. I ditched them all in favor of the bulletproof OnSemis.

EW
you actully believe its not possible to hear any difference betwin amp "A" vs. "B" ?
then i feel very!!!! sorry for you
you hearing must be far below avarage :thumbsdn:
Im 38 years and can still reconize 18.000-19.000Hz in a blind test....the figure is depended on my qoute of sleep.
when i was 20 years i could hear a 20.300 ~ 20.800Hz tone .... :naughty:
Yeah! i had and still have what you know as "golden" ears and this born skill i used with great success in production and later on service of "High Grade" and "High End" amplifires.

TIM is a great hoax ? you have proberly never made or had the messureing facilities to actully investigate "dirty" amps for TIM/IMD, they are both close related and similar in there effect on an amplifires audible performance.

One last comment
I didnt tell the full storie about the 700C/700M ....i left it in the cellar caurse i didnt had the sparetime to re-build the set (Tube pre-amp and MOSFET power-amp) .....Amps are not holy! items, just pieces of HW which like a car can be altered to a better performance :scratch2:

I believe now your karma is shaken ..... :beatnik:

After almost 40 years of conducting hearing tests I have only come across one person who could hear out to 18K. . . A 12 year old female. . . I have yet to find a male that could hear over 17. . . .

Sorry cost you a few bucks.. I was the bidder right under you. Threw a low ball bid with ensnipe. Glad an AK'er picked it up at still a great price.

Well, I just made my first PayPal payment ever for this amp, which was surprisingly easy. Now I don't have to wait for my payment to arrive through the mail, which means it will get sent sooner, YAY!!! Hopefully I will have it by mid next week.

She's on her way!!!

He emailed me to let me know he shipped it and included the tracking number, supposed to be here on Friday. This will give a new meaning to THANK GOD ITS FRIDAY!!!

Save it, I'm just fine, TYVM.

Whatever...

IMD is not TIM.

Not hardly.

I don't have time for a pissing match and even if I did, I'm not interested. I know BS when I see it, and I'll call it out damn near every time. As it regards your post, if the shoe fits...

i had to conclude: in perfect condition.. but obsolete technology wo. prevention for TIM, so i dumped it in my cellar and had forgot all about it...untill i joined AK and noticed you admiration for these amps.
i have wondered about to go and see if i can rescue the "beauty-beasts"

I feel sorry for people who equate old/obsolete with "not good." What exactly is obsolete about the 700M's technology?

On AK, most of the stuff we discuss is made using "obsolete" technology with no prevention for TIM, whatever the hell that is. And hey, if this unit (which I envy!!) is obsolete, don't worry about saving it from your basement. Just let it rot.

All that being said, we'd love to check out your system. Perhaps you could start a thread on what you believe is a kick-ass system. With ways to prevent TIM, I bet it is in a class by itself!!

As a side note, WTF is TIM, anyways?!?!?!?!

Oh, and to Inspiribomb: You should get that thing its own wooden case - it would TRULY be a work of art!!!

Can anybody confirm that the wood enclosures were available in the US - from what I have gathered so far, it seems they were japan-only (again :gigglemad: )...
Fairly "thin", distinguished and not overdone/heavy-ish - just gorgeous!

btw, all of you 700C and 700M (and 600T, 700T, 500, 600 and 650) owners (and future owners) don't forget to register your units on TVK!

PMik,
yours too, please, even if they are rotting away somewhere! I'd be glad to help you get rid of them :D
Never mind TIM, IMD, THD and other hyperspace specs - enjoy the gear!
