Picked up a fisher CA-800 amplifier....

has a nice face plate/I like the way it lights up...assuming it works well...and is up to snuff...rated at 500w....this amplifier any good? I paid $25...don't really need another one but I just thought it looked really good...couldn't pass it up.

What say you fishers?

Looked it up....just another bad Sanyo rebadge under the "Studio Standard" moniker. 500w is most likely its rated input power-which is how much power it pulls from the wall, not how much power it puts out to the speakers. I'd guess 80-100wpc tops.

For $25, I would have passed on it, but then again, I don't need/want it...

I fired it up and was working but the right channel was more wobbly with the meter then the left....then I turned up a bit more then the meter stopped working completely

i'll post some pictures though before I return it..(though no pictures of the meter issue....unplugged it and definitely not gonna re-plug it...thing is heavy.)

thanks dave...I don't know anything about fisher......said made in japan...and saw dials...so thought might be good...

STK-0080's. 100WPC into 8ohms. .09%THD. The "500Watts" on the back panel is the TOTAL MAX Current Draw from the wall. Works out to 4.1666 ad-infinatum amps from the wall. For early mid 80's not too shabby on the build quality, altho the sound is kinda sterile (flat). It sounds like a SX-780 on steroids to me.

It was originally part a of three piece system. The funky looking power supply
plugs on the back are for the tuner and cassette deck. The unit looks good
cosmetically and you didn't pay too much. The other is right about the output.
It will be 100w tops. Just hope the meter itself is ok. I doubt you will find one
other than used.

I thought maybe that was some sort of European plug or something ha....

Thanks for the input all...I will check to see if the channel or the meter is broken...(didn't have the speakers hooked up yet before it stopped working...)

Looks like the right speaker output is not working+ the meter...

I opened it up though and it had a blown fuse....I think something in the circuitry will just make it blow again because before it blew the meter was shaking irregularly...don't want to put the time into this one...just going to return it....

some pictures though for those who would like to see the insides...

Sanyo's efforts on Fisher labeled gear went from complete trash to competing with Marantz.
This might be worth a second thought.

That is not a bad unit for $25, assuming it was fully functional. It will do the job.

As a side note; when attempting to estimate the power output using the consumption figure on the back (500watts), figure total output to be roughly 1/2 of input. Not a hard figure, but useful for a quick guess when shopping.

Let me clarify the previous post.

When looking at vintage, well known name brands from roughly the '70s era, an estimate of 1/2 to 2/3 will be in the general ballpark. Items from the later time period perhaps 1/2 to less. This has nothing to do with quality of sound at this output; that is an assumption to be made from experience.

Before you write the meter off as bad, make sure the channel is actually working properly first.

Which one?

I'd say that would be worth getting up and running properly, it's a handsome looking unit!
