Florida themed KLH Model 24

I’ve been sorting through my audio hoard lately. Selling off stuff I’m never going to use. Honestly some of the gear I have I’ve never even really listened to. I’ll get some gear as freebies as part of a package deal, and do a quick test to see if it works. Then into the pile it goes.

That’s how it was with both these pieces. A Technics SU-7700 that I got for free with a pair of SB7000a speakers, and a pair of KLH model 24 that I got for free with a pair of model 20.

The model 24 sound nice. I was listening to them outside all day today. It’s too bad the previous owner painted them and put the terrible grill cloth on.

It looks like they have a combo cap with 8uf and 16uf. It might just be worth it to recap with NPE and see how they sound.

I think that both these pieces have made it to the next round.

Very nice, but see about getting that paint off the cabinets. I have a pair of 24s and the wood is very nice.

Yes, the Twenty Fours are very nice, underrated speakers. Beautiful sound from a small box. They have the typical thick veneer that KLH used in that era, so restoring those cabinets would be a worthy project.

My biggest issue with them will be one of the corners is splitting. And it’s the top corner, so I have to fix it better than if it was the bottom corner. Haha

Also the grill cloth needs to be replaced. Not just because it’s ugly, but it’s also not acoustically transparent. At all. It blocks a lot of sound from the tweeters. And these guys need all the tweeter output they can get.

Also the RCA plugs suck. It would be nice to have even a cheap pair of binding posts. I’ll look through my stash and see what I have.

I’m also impressed by the SU-7700. When I tested it a year ago it didn’t sound good at all. At that time I went through and cleaned the controls. It had distortion in both channels. Without doing anything to it, this year I plugged it in and it sounds great. So maybe it self-healed over the winter. Lol.

I’d like to find a matching tuner for it. Seems the matching tuners with the wood case are not common.

Yours must be really early versions. Mine have screw terminals.
