"FM" no static all........The movie, the gear, the music....

I have wanted to see FM for a number of years now. It is the one movie that I look for at every thrift and flea that I go to. No luck yet. Don't care about the value, just want to see it.

Thats cool, thanks for posting the pics....:thmbsp:
........we need a screen shot of the Marantz receiver behind Jeff Dugan while he is sitting at the desk there in the 4th shot down.....
I think is a Quad receiver if Im not mistaken......

I might try and do some tonight.......

Did you enjoy the movie...?

Oh yeah I always enjoy watching it again. First time I saw it was in a movie theater in '78.

Here ya go.. 3 more including the Marantz ...

At least 3 of the tape machines in the studio (including the one in the roll-around cart with the deck horizontally mounted) are Scullys.

Ah ha excellent!!......I was lost as to what those RTR's were......the 4 track one in Jeff Dugan's office looks a lot like TEAC, but maybe not.....

While I was watching it I noticed another closeup of a tonearm and cartridge, but it was a Stanton (500?) that time. See if you can capture that! :thmbsp:

Could have well been a Stanton 500.......I thought it might have been a Shure at first.....

The Silver Top loading cassette deck by the Marantz looks like an Akai of some description....

I saw the movie and bought the LP when it first came out. I had to go check and I still have the poster! FM... not static at all.

Good stuff!

Heres some shots I got....

The number plate on Jeff Dugans Porsche 356 cabriolet....

The billboard in the QSKY carpark, notice the 71.1 frequency....must have been the fictitious frequency outside the 88-108mhz range for movie I guess.
p1070039p.jpg

The two turntables have different cartridges on them....this one looks like a shure to me... can anyone confirm this?
p1070040p.jpg

The two AGK C414 microphones....they wouldnt actually use two mics, because of the phase cancellation between the two....they probably thought it looked cool for the movie, in New Zealand broadcasting the EV RE-20 was popular, Shure SM7........Ive not seen these microphones used in broadcasting before for announcers, if they did they would have had windsocks over them to stop the popping with the P sounds, but then that wouldnt have looked as cool, the mics in the news studio had windsocks.....

This looks like an old broadcasting console of some description, its in the corner of the main studio....
p1070045c.jpg

This is either a JBL 4412 or 4312.......in a bracket hanging from the ceiling..
p1070046.jpg

The Front of House mixing console at the Linda Ronstadt concert.....either a Gamble or an ATI......Thought it might be a Harrison.....three possibilities..

This is the other cartridge which looks like a Stanton 500......

Rack mounted RTR and other gear in the news/technincal room next to the main studio....

Its hard to get the screen shots clear enough, but I gave it a go.....Oh and of course I watched the movie while was putting this post together, and now I have just had a inclination listen to Boz Skaggs album Silk Degrees!!!!

1st cart pic is a Shure...the old console is RCA all the way. Regarding the two mics: one may have been hot, the other a backup. Either that or a "guest" mic that the shot foreshortens.

Interesting mix of pro & consumer gear. Damn I wish I could afford that DVD!!

Yeah, you definitely wouldnt have both mic's hot for sure, they are both on a T-Bar only about 6 inches apart, I think you are right......nothing like redundancy!!

Yes you are probably right about the old console, could only be RCA really ......:thmbsp:

I tried for a few shots of the two Marantz receivers, but I couldnt get any real clear shots of them.......they could be a number of models....maybe someone can chime on on Ed's screen shots.
There was one by Jeff Dugans bed with an awesome 70's alarm clock, which was nearly big as the receiver.......

They did a great job of mocking up the radio studio........they had a lot of vinyl in there.......

Linda Ronstadt did a fantastic version of Tumbling Dice in this movie....

Anyone looking for a DVD of FM... there are a few on ebay for a very reasonable price right now. I just bought two.

I always though WKRP was a more realistic portrayal of day to day at the radio station. Most Top 40 DJ's were Johnny Fever. Met too many like Herb and Les.

Hadn't seen this thread before. Count me in the never-seen-the-movie-but-love-the-soundtrack gang. I remember buying it backs in the 80s, shortly after I started getting into records, because it had Life's Been Good on it (store didn't have the Joe Walsh album and the owner told me it was on the soundtrack). It had lots of other stuff the I knew I liked, so I grabbed it. No regrets at all.

The movie is worth it if you can get a copy, there are a few tracks in the movie which aren't on the soundtrack, BB King, and a couple of others too...
I just watched the movie again a couple of weeks ago....never get tired of it...

FM Studio mixing console is a RCA. Tonearms on FM control room turntables are Micro-Trak arms. Cartridges installed on Micro-Trak tonearms is a Shure SC 35. The second cartridge is a Stanton 500. Turntables look to be Technics SP-10 Mk II. Open reel decks are Scully 280.

Thanks, I knew if you saw this thread you would have the answers.......:thmbsp:

Cheers,
